Description

An old house from 1930s, recently refurbished by the country's leading architect, Channa Daswatte MICDA, has been my family's ancestral property. Rajasthan Room is my Indian folly, draped in loud colors, a vibrant space which is in the upper level, as my own bedroom. It is air conditioned and also has much shade from canopy of a ficus tree. Both the library and the oriental lounge are also a part of the upper floor. If requested, home cooked meals will be served in the kitchen, downstairs. The space One is always reminiscent of one's childhood home, some more than others. The Asapuwa, my family home , a high-ceiling, colonial style inspired - yet more eclectic as a result of recent refurbishments - is two storey twin house, built in late 1930s. In spite of its vintage feeling of the dry paint peeling off here and there from window frames, its historical charm elevates itself, considering the drab suburbia where every inch is brutally built. Mine is a modest, yet grand place whose meticulous maintenance has allowed pleasant living for three generations. Yet, it is a tropical house in suburban Colombo where one may NOT have the pleasure of avoiding a line of ants trailing along the floor corners. gekho governed age-old rafters. Hence anybody entertaining the the idea of Northeren European sanitised living should look for another alternative. What I love about my home is outside space is integrated into living space. There are three small gardens with lounge chairs, both to escape the heat and be marveled by the dusk descending. The thick lush wall of banana plants provides a breathtaking view. Guest access The Asapuwa is multifaceted. You enter through a well-manicured patch of green where you can sit and enjoy the benign shade of a large tree. Room downstairs with its en-suite bathroom has a seperate entrance, in addition to the exquisitely designed living room and the dining room. They both showcase my love for artefacts, especially kilims I have collected through various travels. And the brand new kitchen allures anyone who enjoys cooking, one of my passions. An elegant, typical Daswatte style stairway leads to the upper floor which has two bedrooms with their own bathrooms. In addition, the guests may use the library and the lounge room which gives the feeling of being at more of a Morrocan Pasha or a Kyrgyz yort. Upper floor also has its own terrace adorned by green shrubs and ivy type, hugging the parapet wall. During your stay Fate has made me create yet another home in Oslo, Norway! Hence; I won't be there most of the time. Kamani, my nanny who has been with us for 30 years together with Chandra will make sure that all your needs are attended to. They have their own space downstairs and will NOT be around, unless 'summoned':) Guests in all rooms have independent access. Other things to note Guests may use the open kitchen to prepare light refreshments. No ‘big cooking’ pls. On request, all meals can be provided- half a day in advance. (Authentic Sri Lankan home cooking) Breakfast - USD 4 Lunch - USD 6 Dinner - USD 6
