Description
The house is situated on a 3500sq.m. plot on the seafront, and consists of comfortable rooms to stay in (two levels) as well as places for exercising and doing sports. The space The house is isolated from passer-byes, in an area with clean waters and a rich natural and cultural environment, and located across from a uninhabitable green island where one can get to only by boat. There is a graveled road (300m) which leads to the house from the main road, named Glafkos Pontios street, which according to the mythology and local traditions, it is where the semi-god Glafkos Pontios or Glafkos the Anthedonian, son of the ancient god of the sea Poseidon and of a Naiada nymph of fresh waters , or according to another myth, that of King Anthedona, who established the ancient city of Anthedona, and Alkionis, daughter of Aeolus, the god of the winds. Glafkos, in ancient mythology, is described as a human from the waist up and a fish from the waist down (a merman). According to the ancient myths , Glafkos is the protector of seafarers, as happened with Jason’s ship in the Argonautic venture when sailing through a very dangerous passage, between Scylla and Charibdis (see Philostratus of Lemnios “Glafkos Pontios”). Nearby there is a place called “Glafkos Jump” where according to the ancient traveler Pausanias, Glafkos tried in vain to jump into the sea in order to commit suicide because of him being tired of his immortality. His name means “Light Blue the Seafarer”, which represents the blue color of the Greek sky when it is reflected on the surface of the Greek sea waters. Obviously, this myth is associated to the fact that habitants of ancient Anthedona had a close relationship with the sea and in Homer’s years many of them were divers who fished “haustellum brandaris or “Porfires” (in Greek) shells from which porpura, a dark red color was produced, and materials were in those days dyed in. It was impossible not to take into consideration all the above in order to build the house which is not separated from the sea and the beach with any artificial element (road or compound) but is a continuation of it. The occupants of this house stand on land while their feet are wet by the sea, just like imaging happened to Glafkos Pontios when he once stood there. Even to today, the beach at that point, cannot be accessed but only through the lot of the house. Rarely will you see anyone walking by since the morphology of the coast is not approachable. However, in any case the house provides and has configured a private beach on the lot with environmentally-friendly structures (an outdoor barbeque, a sink, a shower and a small storage place for swim stuff). Eastward and westward of the lot, only 100 meters away, there are more hidden sandy beaches, where one can take a nice and quiet swim. Towards the west, 700 meters away, two jetties have been salvaged from one of most ancient ports in the Mediterranean (the port of ancient Anthedona). The marine force of ancient Anthedona is mentioned for the first time from Homer, in the list of ships that took part in the Trojan War, in Iliad B, verses 498 and 500. Towards the south, 2 km away, is the nearest village (Anthedona or Loukisia), where you can find a bakery, a supermarket and three taverns with Greek traditional cuisine. Eastwards, 4 km away, is an area called “Alikes” which is a well-organized beach area with a lot of sea sport facilities and well-set up leisure establishments which makes it a magnet mostly for younger people. Towards the east, 10 km away, lies the contemporary and touristic city of Chalkida with a population of 60.000. It provides extensive infrastructure and services (banks, a hospital, shops, specialized doctors, restaurants, coffee places, etc.). There is a new archaeological museum with substantial exhibits which was inaugurated in 2016. What’s more, there is a unique phenomenon: In the center of the city where the mainland meets the island of Evia, there is small distance of water (50m) which separates them with a beautiful bridge. At that specific place the water runs forcefully and gathers violently in the narrow channel forming whirlpools. Although the intensity of the current varies and its timing changes according to the phases of the moon, it maintains a basic recurrence, with the waters running 6 hours one way and 6 hours the other way, complying always and only to the calling of the moon. The solution to the mystery of recurrence and that of the phenomenon in general, was Euripus’ goal in life in the ancient times. But, in vain. In the end, depressed, he committed suicide falling in the onrush waters and in this way, without knowing, gave his name to the strait. On the way to Chalkida, one can also visit the archaeological site of the temple of the goddess Artemis in Aulis, where according to Homer Iphigenia, the daughter of the king Agamemnona, was sacrificed in order for fair winds to blow and for the Greek ships which were impatiently waiting in the nearby bay to sail off so they could reach desirable Troy. Note that in a small theater near the temple, among things, the great tragedy of Euripides “Iphigenia in Aulis” is performed and if you are lucky, you might be able to see it at the same place where the tragedy happened 4000 years ago. Towards the east, 25 km away, is located the city of Eretria, which has many hotel installations and is distinguished for its well-kept ancient theater. In the north of Evia, 70 km away, is the village Prokopi which is worldwide known for its orthodox Christian peregrination of the Russian Saint John. Athens, the capital of Greece is 80 km south. There is a big airport as well as all the services a European capital might have. Of course, it is worthwhile visiting the archaeological site of Acropolis which is a monument of worldwide cultural heritage as well as the new archaeological museum which was built in 2004 near the Acropolis and is unique in regard of its exhibits which relate to the ancient Greek civilization. About 100 km eastwards (1 ½ hour by car) lies another monument of worldwide cultural heritage, the religious center of ancient Greece, the Oracle of Delphi, and a museum with substantial exhibits. Guest access On the first level there is a semi-autonomous apartment consisting of three large bedrooms (about 30sq. m. each), each with its own bathroom, and a living room (60sq. m.) with a view towards the yard. Also, there is a bar, fireplace and a kitchen. Depending on one’s needs, the kitchen, one bedroom and bathroom can be isolated without communicating with the rest of the house (in case needed for guests’ domestic staff). On the second level, which is 2 stories, there is a big kitchen, a storage room with a washing machine and a dryer, a bathroom, an office (30sq. m.) with two couches that become single beds and can be used as a 6th bedroom (if required by the guests), a large living-room (90sq. m.) with a view toward the sea, a big satellite TV, Internet, a big fireplace, an outdoor living-room, and on the same level a outdoor pool (70 sq. m.). Note that all the bedrooms, except for two out of the three on the first level, have an extraordinary view of the sea.
