Enjoy 120 acres of an award-winning permaculture demonstration site in the high desert of SW Colorado located immediately adjacent to great hiking in Canyon of the Ancients National Monument. With spectacular views of Mesa Verde National Park, the Rockies of San Juan National Forest and the Sleeping Ute Mountain, you will gain new insights into the quote "I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help!" Also, just 20 miles from the Mesa Verde National Park entrance. The Mesa Verde House is a beautiful guest suite with an attached sun room that can accommodate up to 2 additional single mattresses if you have family or traveling companions. The is an off the grid homestead property that was started 6 years ago with nothing on the land. We designed and built it ourselves. In addition, we also have The Juniper tent on the property which can sleep 2-4 others if you are traveling in a group. Tent camping is also a possibility for fellow travelers. Be aware that, owing to the ongoing drought, and the fact that we are a permaculture demonstration site, we utilize composting toilets that are very different from flush toilets but are perfectly safe and sanitary. The lodge has a great room that guests have shared access to. The great room has a rocket mass heater and room for dining parties of up to 20. There is a very spacious covered outdoor kitchen (see pictures) with alfresco dining area. During the winter months, however, we can not connect the sink due to freezing temperatures. You still have the use of the stove and refrigerator and, during these times, you are also welcome to share the lodge kitchen with us. At the end of March 2022 we will have a brand new private bathroom built for the Mesa Verde House to replace the shared one that guests have used for the last several years. We live in the lodge and work on the ranch so are available virtually all the times unless we have driven in to town or are guiding wild food hikes or teaching permaculture classes. We can be reached by email, phone or text virtually around the clock and usually respond within minutes. To get to the city of Cortez, Colorado you will drive North from the ranch 2.2 miles, East 3.3 miles and then South 4.4 miles. Cortez has a good selection of coffee shops, restaurants, shopping and cultural activities. Another 10 miles East gets you to the entrance to Mesa Verde National Park and, another 35 miles East of the park is the city of Durango, Colorado. The ranch has virtually unlimited hiking and the country roads in the neighborhood are great for taking our beach cruisers on. The area has world class mountain biking in the desert or mountains and, depending on the time of year, you can enjoy whitewater kayaking or rafting near our other BNB properties in Dolores, Colorado just 20 minutes away. The city parks in Cortez have great rollerblading trails and a beautiful, tree lined ultimate frisbee course and the Conquistador Golf course rivals many more famous courses for it tree lined fairways and mountain vistas. The ranch is 10 minutes from the city of Cortez and about an hour from Durango, CO and an hour and 20 minutes from Telluride, CO. We enjoy making scones, spice cakes and other goodies which are available with coffee in the morning if you desire it. Further meal accommodations can be discussed as needed.
