Elm Tree Cottage

Description

Quaint, thatched, Grade II listed, C16th cottage in centre of rural village, close to coast. Walk to Bude or Widemouth Bay. Original slate floors (with rugs), low beamed ceilings, inglenook fireplace with electric heater. Smart TV. Bathroom refurb in 2024. Comfortably furnished. Overlooks village square and plenty of parking. Secure rear garden. Dog walks nearby. Electric heating in all rooms. Friendly village has pub (dogs accepted), Shop, churches, play area, walks. The space Elm Tree Cottage offers 1 double (new kingsize 5' bed with hotel quality mattress), 1 twin, bathroom with new bath and electric shower over (downstairs as with most cottages of this age), towels provided, good-sized cosy sitting room with dining area, inner hallway, kitchen. Beds are made up for your arrival. There is WiFi, smart TV, DVD, radio, books, games. The kitchen has fridge-freezer, full size cooker, microwave, washing machine etc. The double and twin bedrooms are upstairs with an interconnecting door. There is an additional very narrow spiral staircase to give separate access to twin room. This enables access to bedroom 2 without going through bedroom 1. The spiral staircase can be closed and locked at the top to prevent small children using it. There are low beamed ceilings, low doorways and changes in level. May not be suitable for the elderly, infirm or tall! Please enquire. PLEASE READ "OTHER DETAILS TO NOTE" BELOW Pets welcome by arrangement. There are plenty of dog walks locally and dog bins in the village. Please mention at time of booking. Other things to note This is a 400+ year old Grade II listed cottage so ceiling heights are lower than modern ones but fine for most people. If you are over 6' this information will be helpful. Bedroom 1 and 2 ceilings 6'5", connecting doorway 5'6", bathroom 7'1", living room generally 6' with one low beam at 5'9". Doorways generally 5'9". Kitchen ceiling very high. The floors may be uneven and there are changes in level. The stairs to the double bedroom are quite steep. No proper hand rail but a quirky oar (see pics). The spiral staircase is very narrow and not suitable for everyone. If the spiral staircase is not used the only access to bedroom 2 is through bedroom 1. The spiral staircase gives separate access and therefore privacy for all adult parties (however I feel this cottage is maybe best suited for a couple or a couple with children). The wall separating the two bedrooms is plaster and lath and not thick like modern walls. When children are staying the hatch at the top of the spiral staircase can be closed to prevent them using it. The kitchen has recently been refurbished. The bathroom is downstairs and has been refurbished for 2024. Hot water is fed from an immersion tank. It arrives in the kitchen slowly!! The shower is electric and heats its own water. There are 2 main heaters giving background heating, an electric fire in the inglenook and electric heaters in all the rooms. I do not use chemical sprays to kill spiders, but I have electronic deterrent - however, in a cottage with a thatched roof and cob walls there may be spiders even though I check and remove any that have come in at every changeover! Please read the information carefuly and if you have any questions please contact me.
