The space From 1932 to 2017, bridge house ‘Van Hallbrug’ accommodated the city’s many bridge keepers. In 2017, the bridge house started a new chapter as one of SWEETS hotel's 28 hotel rooms. As with every SWEET, Van Hallbrug’s interior is inspired by its architectural history. Architect 1932: Pieter Lodewijk Kramer Architect 2017: Space&Matter Architectural Style: Amsterdam School Waterway: Kostverlorenvaart Bridge Type: Bascule bridge The construction of the Van Hallbrug (bridge) in 1932 created a direct traffic route between the neighbourhood Frederik Hendrikbuurt and Haarlemmerweg (street). Adjacent to the bridge, Pieter Lodewijk Kramer designed bridge house Van Hallbrug, which stands prominently on the Van Hallstraat (street). This is the third building in the series Kramer designed, after the (now demolished) Zeilstraatbrug bridge house and the Willemsbrug bridge house. The red bitumen roof is shaped like a peaked cap. The bridge was operated from a control lectern underneath the cap’s peak, which sheltered the bridgekeeper from the rain. Like many of the bridge control buildings Kramer designed, this building has broad, white window frames that continue around the corners. Guest access Guests have access to the entire bridge house, including a double bed (160x200cm), a toilet, a shower and coffee & tea facilities. The entrance is unlocked with the guest's own smartphone, by making use of a mobile key app and Bluetooth. Other things to note Listen to your favourite music by connecting your phone to the provided Bluetooth speaker! A basic cleaning check is done every day. Please note that the bridge is still fully operational and might open and close during your stay. It is a unique experience to wave at the ships passing by, but be careful when going outside.
