Hoepoe Cottage is a private garden cottage with a separate entrance, comprising an open-plan living area downstairs with a beautiful loft bedroom & bathroom under thatch. Equipped to suit guests every need, Hoepoe is ideal for a business executive or a couple requiring a longer stay. TV, fibre WiFi & good security. If you require a 2nd bedroom please use our Hoepoe/Studio combination. We now run on solar power! The space The open-plan cottage is comfortable, tastefully furnished, secure, environmentally friendly and equipped to suit guests every need. It consists of a lounge and kitchen downstairs and a bedroom with en suite bathroom upstairs. It has a private entrance and a parking bay on the property. The dining table serves as a workspace. Need a second bedroom? Please use our Hoepoe/Studio combination as these spaces can be inter-linked. We have enhanced our green footprint by installing solar power and also have a back-up water supply from our underground stream. We do not have aircon, but the cottage is designed for natural ventilation with cross ventilation through windows on 3 sides. Thatch is cool in summer, warm in winter. We built our home ourselves using many recycled materials from Joburg's early mining days, adding the cottages over the years. We have over 30 years experience of hosting many international visitors: business guests, tourists and exchange students. The garden is mostly indigenous, full of trees, ponds and birdlife yet a stone's throw from the bustle of city life. We grow our own organic vegetables, lemons and plums. Wake up in the morning to the Giant Kingfisher or Grey Heron fishing in the ponds or spot the Glossy Starlings or Pied Barbet at the bird feeder. After a dip in the pool at the end of a long day, enjoy sundowners on the patio to the chirp of frogs in the wetland. Guest access Our guests are welcome to relax on the patio, stroll around the garden, enjoy a swim in the pool, pick veggies or fruit or join us in our living room if they would like company. The garden is a paradise for active children with space to run, trees to climb and even an old tractor to take them on an imaginary journey. However, as our ponds are not netted the garden is unfortunately not suitable for children that are not thoroughly water-safe. Other things to note NB: Please ensure that you locate the right street as there are two streets with the identical name in Bryanston! GPS gets our address WRONG so PLEASE carefully follow the directions we send to you! We ARE easy to find, so please check and use our directions whether arriving in your own car or by Uber/taxi. Apart from our regular breakfast menu, we are able to cater for vegans, vegetarians and, on request, other dietary options. Please be sure to let us know of any specific requirements beforehand. Sweet-natured little dog, Pepper, arrived from the rescue centre a few years ago. She inhabits the main house and large garden, but not the Cottages or any of the guest bedrooms. As we live on the property too, The Handbuilt House is NOT suitable for partying or "one night stands".
