Churchtown Farm Cottage, West Anstey, Exmoor Devon

Churchtown Farm Cottage is part of a Devon longhouse dating back to the 17th century featuring an original bakers oven in the fireplace which has a wood burning stove. We're a working farm with sheep, cows, chickens, geese & friendly dogs. Situated in the foothills of Exmoor on The Two Moors Way with beautiful scenery and walks, we are next door to West Anstey Church. Part of Exmoor's Dark Sky area. Great base for exploring the North Devon Coast. Dogs are very welcome. Enclosed garden. The space If you enjoy walking we are on The Two Moors Way next door to West Anstey Church which is really pretty and is still used for services. Plenty of space in all the bedrooms upstairs and downstairs, large cosy lounge with a big radiator and a woodburner for those chilly nights. The kitchen is well equipped with plenty of utensils including a washing machine, dish washer, fridge freezer, microwave, electric cooker, plenty of cutlery, crockery and cooking pots and pans. The kitchen is not huge but is all fully fitted. The dining room/entrance hall has a large wooden table with 6 chairs around the table, spare chairs can be found in the cupboard upstairs to seat 8 people. The lounge has 3 large sofas, tv, DVD player and a part sky package. There is also a hifi comprising of a record deck, tape player, CD player and radio! A docking station for iPads is in the dining room. There are plenty of books to read, jigsaw puzzles and some games. All the rooms apart from the kitchen and dining rooms have views of the front garden, church and fields. As we are a working farm there are animals around in the fields and depending on the time of year visitors are welcome to wander around our main barn to see the cows and sheep. At lambing time there are often orphan lambs that need bottle feeding, some guests have watched the births of new lambs and calves! Our rescue chickens will eat corn from your hands and welcome any leftover food which helps make our eggs so yellow and tasty. The cottage sleeps 8 people - downstairs bedroom has king size bed plus single bed, upstairs bedroom has a double bed plus single bed and the other upstairs bedroom has a kingsize bed. If you are just 2 people we can offer a reduction on the price. We are in a rural area so we do advise you bring a car. We can book taxis and also recommend great places to eat. If you would like to arrange for a welcome breakfast box please let us know. We have outside electric sockets for car charging at extra cost. If you would like to stay in an area that is very close to country pursuits that might include fishing, walking, horse riding, clay pigeon shooting and other outside activities this is an ideal place to stay. Guest access Churchtown Farm and Cottage is a 16th century Devon Longhouse divided in half. We live in one side with the other side forming Churchtown Farm Cottage, which is really spacious, has its own entrance and plenty of parking for more than 3 cars. Access to the enclosed garden in front of the cottage is via a side gate. We are around on the farm if you need anything but do leave you in peace to do your own thing! After booking, we arrange keys and and a time to meet and greet you. Other things to note Our nearest small town is Dulverton, a 10 minute drive where you'll find a supermarket, tea rooms and a good mix of shops for just having a browse around plus a walk by the river. Great places to eat include The Bridge Inn, Woods Wine Bar, Tongdam Thai restaurant plus a take away fish and chip shop. The beautiful Tarr Steps with Tarr Farm Inn is about 15 minutes away, walk along the river, cross the clapper bridge, see the money tree and then enjoy a cream tea, lunch or dinner at Tarr Farm with stunning scenery. on the way back visit Liscombe Farm and see the ice cream being made. If you fancy horse riding, visit West Anstey Riding Stables is just up the road from our farm, Earl and his team can take you for a ride across the moors, you might even be lucky enough to see the wild deer or exmoor ponies! Then take a visit to Hinam Farm Tea Rooms, Esther delicious afternoon tea is a real winner, she also takes booking for Sunday lunch too! In the other direction and 10 minute drive visit the London Inn at Molland for some delicious food in a lovely pub with a big open fire, great atmosphere with hosts Claire and Stuart, try some of our own lamb which is often on the menu! If you fancy Michelin star food visit The Masons Arms at Knowstone. Bampton is 15 minutes drive, visit The Ginger Peanut and The Swan Inn, both produce excellent local food with seasonal menus. We have great sources of local foods around us, we can arrange for some delicious local bacon and sausages for your breakfast to go with fresh eggs from our chickens. Devon is beautiful to explore but please note we do have lanes and not busy motorways! Traffic jams are usually caused by animals on the roads so please be patient. Phone signals are very hit and miss but enjoy being out of contact for a change, wifi signals have a mind of their own and a delivery of take away food is very rare, although we can get supermarket deliveries! Dogs visiting us love the freedom and fresh air as much as the children who can play outside in the garden quite safely. Our cottage is certainly not perfect but it is very relaxing and hopefully gives you some down time to chill and create memories with friends and family. We just ask you to respect the age of our cottage, think about preserving the planet and leave the cottage as tidy as you find it. Many thanks!
