Bassenthwaite Lake Old Smoke House

The Smoke House is part of Dunthwaite House Semurthy NR Bassenthwaite Lake &Cockermouth The space Very unusual smoke house 250 yards from the River Derwent attached to 200 year old renowned manor house (Dunthwaite House) set in secluded parkland. Entrance is from stone steps to the first floor sitting room with one twin bedroom and one double either side of the sitting room. The bathroom is on the ground floor and is accessed by very steep stairs from the bedrooms and sitting room. There are lots of beams which used to be for hanging hams in 1823 . The large country kitchen is situated on the ground floor along with a large shower room/bathroom. The kitchen is basic with no dishwasher or washing machine. If you love the country and are inspired by the scenery this is the place to stay . Walk out of the door into completely secluded parkland with a river at the end of a field.. If you haven't been to the Lakes before we are just down the road 2miles from Bassenthwaite Lake, great for wild swimming . The nearest town is Cockermouth 3 miles away with plenty of great Cumbrian Pubs and restaurants. A car is essential, or bikes of course and ideal for cycling on the country roads. The Smokehouse is out of the way and out of the ordinary! So come and stay! Guest access There is a seating area for a table and chairs or barbacue. Access to the top end of the garden but no access to the side of the house or the front. Access to the river is through garden gate, there are lots of long superb river walks for 3 miles straight from the garden gate. Other things to note The staircase is very steep and unsuitable for families with small children. Please note if you are elderly and need the bathroom in the night it's tricky. We also have bats which are protected by law and so if they do fly through the smokehouse don't be scared-they are harmless and quite shy!
