Description

Renovated traditional Japanese farmhouse with a great view of Minami Alps and a stretch of rice fields and forests in front. On the foothills of Yatsugatake Mt. Ideal retreat for Tokyoites who want to enjoy country living in a quiet, beautiful setting. Enjoy nearby trails, walks, and cooking in a spacious kitchen/dining area with family, as well as a woodstove to keep warm. If you want to experience what is like to live in the Japanese countryside, this is your place. You'll need a car. The space This house is 100+ years old, constructed in the typical Japanese farmhouse "kominka" style. I use this for our weekend visits from Tokyo, and has been renovated to my taste. Its located in Kobuchizawa, known for the trails in Yatsugatake mountains, and also as a summer retreat. House elevation is 850 meters, which makes it ideal for beating the summer heat. Conversely it gets to -10 Celsius in the winter. The stars are beautiful at night---you'll marvel at the skies. The house has a front yard with a spectacular view of the Minami Alps, forests, and rice fields. Its ideal for having a leisurely lunch or having beer/wine outside with friends/family. Outdoor seats are provided. Upon entrance, there is a large "Doma", a shoes allowed area with a high ceiling that's common to these farmhouses, where the dining table, kitchen, sofa, and the woodstove are. You'll most likely spend a lot of time here, cooking, eating, and relaxing. Dogs are permitted in this area too so you'll be able to spend time with your entire family. There are 4 open rooms, with the bedroom separated by Shoji doors (paper sliding doors). Typical of Japanese houses, don't expect privacy between the rooms---the paper doors are more of a partition than a wall/door. This does however give the house an airy feel, with wind passing by every room. The bathroom/toilet is new and clean, with a washing machine. The cedar walled bath tub is great for relaxation, with a large window looking out the back yard. The house will be cold in the winter and you'll need to use the woodstove as there are no other heating methods. Near the woodstove it will be warm, but not enough to heat the entire house. There are no shops in the walk-able area, so you'll need a car to buy anything. I do have a large fridge, so I suggest you bring your own food and beverage. Typical cooking utensils, microwave, rice cooker, dutch oven, etc., are available. The house is a wonderful retreat. If you're looking for a fancy resort this is not for you---but if you like the countryside living or dream of it one day, this is a great place to lounge. Let me know if you have questions! Guest access You'll have access to all of the house. Other things to note There are 4 futon mattresses which are each the size of a single bed. Parking for 2 cars. The sliding doors are made of paper and wood and delicate---so be careful! The door frames are typical of Japanese houses and low (170cm)---so watch your head. Barbecue/outdoor fire is not allowed due to fire concerns. Pets are allowed in the "Doma" (shoe area) only. Not in the bedrooms please. Dishes and cooking utensils are provided. Security cameras installed in house perimeters. One in front yard and other in the back yard. Registration Details M190026276
