The Hamilton is a 1920s Pullman train car located in the historic village of Lamy, NM in it's own tree lined park next to the Lamy Train Station where Amtrak stops twice daily. A 20 minute drive from Santa Fe makes this is a great getaway while staying close to the action. The Hamilton is a 2 min walk to the soon to be opened El Ortiz Cafe, Nuckolls Beer Garden and The Legal Tender Restaurant. Take a trip back in time while enjoying modern perks like AC, WIFI, and fire pit. S'mores anyone?! The space There are many historic, fascinating and unique places to go and things to see when you visit Santa Fe for the first or the 20th time. The newest is our very elegant 100 year old, completely updated Pullman Private Train Car, The Hamilton. Located 20 minutes outside of Santa Fe in the village of Lamy, The Hamilton is permanently fixed in its own park next to the historic Lamy Station. The park at one time was home to the El Ortiz Hotel, one of the smallest and most beautiful of the Harvey Houses along the railways. Built in the 1880’s as part of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe line. Today the station has daily Amtrak service and will soon have its own rail service to Santa Fe. The Santa Fe Southern Railroad is close to unveiling their fun and exciting excursion trips between the Santa Fe Railyard and Lamy Station. The Hamilton was built in the 1920’s and used as a 10-berth sleeper car that ran daily between New York and Chicago for 20 years. It was then sold to the Southern Railroad and transformed into a luxury business car for Railroad executives. The car consists of a luxurious Observation Room whose amazingly comfortable original leather sofa folds down into a twin-size bed. Down the hall you will find two full bedrooms that each sleep two each with original en suite bathrooms. The ceilings of the common rooms are covered in Damask fabric and tufted red velvet which worked as a soundproofing system and also provided lovely old world ambience. Further down the hall there is another small bathroom that is fully equipped with original basin and shower and includes a built-in closet and set of drawers. Next is the large, elegant dining room where there are two hidden murphy beds if you need more room for your guests to spread out. There is also a large buffet with a hidden typewriter for the secretaries use when traveling back in the day with his or her Railroad Executive boss. The cabinets and all of the closets in the Hamilton are lined in red velvet which helped things to shift as little as possible during your travels. The dining room has a table for six and a host of fun board and card games. Another short walk down the hall you will find the original stainless-steel kitchen, half of which is set up for the Porter who back in the day would mix your cocktails and plate your meals (Throughout the car you will see small call buttons for your on-duty train Porter). The second part of the kitchen was the domain of the chef. The kitchen has had very modest updates in order to keep as much of the original kitchen as possible, including its original 1940’s gas 4 burner gas stove with oven, heating oven and griddle. The kitchen has its original refrigeration which can be accessed from both the chef’s side and the Porter’s side. On the back platform you will find a full modern, but retro style refrigerator for your use as well. There is a small room off of the porters side of the kitchen which was used to house both the porter and the chef on long journeys. It sleeps two and has it’s own bathroom which is not operating at this time. We like to use it to have our morning coffee and if we are lucky to see a train or two. The Hamilton is in its own park right down from the Historic Lamy Station built in the 1880's. The track leads straight to the Railyard in Santa Fe and its Historic Train Station and all of the galleries, shops, restaurants and movie theaters that the Santa Fe Railyard has to offer. And then of course there is all of Santa Fe right there with all of its beauty and wonderful things to do and see. Sitting on the deck of the Hamilton back in Lamy you will see Amtrak come by (East and West bound) just yards away to pick up and drop off passengers. Lamy Station is a working station. In just a short while the El Ortiz Cafe and Knucholls will be open where you will meeting friendly New Mexicans from all around the area and have a meal. Across the dirt Road is the famous Legal Tender Saloon reopening with a top notch new chef who promises to bring back and revise recipes from Railroads Golden Age, The Legal Tender as a historic old Saloon/Restaurant that is famous to Santa Fe locals and is the site of some of the biggest Western films that continue to be made in New Mexico. Now wander back to The Hamilton and sit on its wide open deck in its own tree lined park and immerse yourself in the night sky. On a good night the constellations are bright and seem close enough to touch. When you book your nights on the Hamilton check out the websites of the Santa Fe Southern Railroad to see what upcoming events they may have planned. And of course call The Legal Tender for dinner reservations for an evening of your stay. We can't wait to hear what you think about The Hamilton. We have had a blast staycationing in it ourselves. Book now! You won't regret it. Guest access Guests have access to the whole train car and the outdoor space parallel to the train. Other things to note Please remember that you are parallel to a live train track. You'll hear the train a comin' much like Johnny Cash... please stay behind the yellow line.
