Meaning behind the Tibetan Dragon: Dragons have been part of Tibetan culture for at least 7,000 years. Dragons have long symbolized power, creativity, heaven, and good fortune. They are thought to have authority over bodies of water, rain, floods, and storms. In time, Buddhist artists adopted the dragon as a symbol of enlightenment. Today dragons decorate roofs and gates of temples, both as guardians and to symbolize the dragon's power of clarity. Buddhist dragons often are depicted holding a mani jewel, which represents the Buddha's teaching. The apartment is located in Swoyambhunath area and overlooking the Stupa, which is listed in one of the top UNESCO World Heritage Site. Swoyambhu is also where most expats live in Nepal as it is a quite but a touristic place with lots of restaurant and eateries. About Swoyambhunath Swoyambhunath Stupa is the most ancient and enigmatic of all the holy shrines in Kathmandu valley. Its lofty white dome and glittering golden spire are visible for many miles and from all sides of the valley. Historical records found on a stone inscription give evidence that the stupa was already an important Buddhist pilgrimage destination by the 5th century AD. Its origins however, date to a much earlier time, long before the arrival of Buddhism into the valley. A collection of legends about the site, the 15th century Swoyambhu Purana, tells of a miraculous lotus, planted by a past Buddha, which blossomed from the lake that once covered Kathmandu valley. The lotus mysteriously radiated a brilliant light, and the name of the place came to be Swoyambhu, meaning 'Self-Created or Self-Existent'. Saints, sages and divinities traveled to the lake to venerate this miraculous light for its power in granting enlightenment. During this time, the Bodhisatva Manjushri was meditating at the sacred mountain of Wu Tai Shan and had a vision of the dazzling Swoyambhu light. Manjushri flew across the mountains of China and Tibet upon his blue lion to worship the lotus. Deeply impressed by the power of the radiant light, Manjushri felt that if the water were drained out of the lake Swoyambhu would become more easily accessible to human pilgrims. With a great sword Manjushri cut a gorge in the mountains surrounding the lake. The water, draining away, left the valley of present day Kathmandu. The lotus was then transformed into a hill and the light became the Swoyabhunath Stupa. Public transportation is just 1 min walk from my place. It cost between $0.20 - $0.30 cents to travel one way to any place within Kathmandu area (most popular being Thamel, Patan, Durbarmarg, Bhaktapur, Boudha) which are all very easily accessible. Taxi stand is a minute walk too. ( Cost $2-$3 to most of the major attractions Kathmandu has to offer). Things to be aware of when you're in Kathmandu: - Water and Electricity is very scarce in Kathmandu, Nepal. However, we have 24hr running water taps and 24hr electricity. (But please use then wisely as the water in the washing and showering taps are all bought drinking water aswell) - Lots of dust so always have a face mouth mask - Lots of pickpocketers so always be careful in busy tourist area - Taxi and car prices are high as cars are 275% expensive in Nepal due to tax and hence its absorbed into the car fare - Most vegetables and fruits are organic - Restaurants and shops close by 8pm so please plan everything ahead - Nightlife district is Thamel and there it closes by 9:30-10pm but during night Thamel is very crowded and loud due to restaurants, clubs and bars - Anyways thamel is only mere 3km from my place 10min drive only $4 or 20mins walk, so you can always go there easily - The popular places to eat near my place are BIA cafe which is 1 min walk inside from our house. Then Fine Grains Bakery, Swoyambhu Bakery, Zhang Korean Restaurant, Krunchy Fried Chicken and Burger House, Swoyambhu coffee house, Indian veg restaurant, Zambala Tibetan Restaurant and night local food stalls which are all within 5 mins walk - We have many local grocery shops; when you exit the main road from my house and take the left, walk about 3 mins and on your left will be Buddha foods which is a big departmental store - Local police station is 5 mins away - Pharmacy and medical help is just opposite buddha park, 5 mins walk - Liquor store is 2 mins away - Laundry is also 2 mins away - We have a swimming pool and poolside cafe next to our house aswell - Taxis are easily available around the house, however, taxi stand is within 2 mins walk For any other help or info please do not hesitate to call me during anytime of the day or night. I am always ready to help my guest in need.
