STORE FRONT For many years, this portion of the building housed of the town’s only barbershop. Now it's a gallery for rustic art and furniture made by family member Dan Brinkerhoff. This space is completely sealed off from the home and accessible only from the street. Currently the shop is open only on a few select weekends during the year or by appointment. FRONT PORCH The front porch lies above the storefront and faces the street. It offers good views of the Callicoon Theater marquis and the old train depot famed by the valley’s vibrant hills. The view directly across the street of the local, self-service car wash is not very pleasant, to be honest, but the comings and goings of its patrons adds a splash of local color. BACK PORCH This overlooks an adorable old barn, year-round spring, and small private hillside forest. Thus, despite the property's location on the very edge of the commercial district—Rafter’s Tavern is so close that you could crawl home if you really needed to—the back porch feels almost rural. It provides ground-level access to the house via the kitchen. IN-HOUSE ENTERTAINMENT Learn how to play the piano on an upright acoustic Yamaha. Catch up on classic literature with an extensive book collection. Admire the many local landscape paintings placed throughout the house. Listen to your favorite podcast over a wooden Bluetooth speaker. Pour a drink at the bar (b.y.o. booze). Play board games. We don’t have a TV, but you can stream movies on your own device using our high-speed internet connection. Guest access Apart from a single locked closet, the entire 2-story home with all amenities is included in this rental. Outdoor seating areas, lawns, and woods are also available for guests to enjoy. If you do, be sure to apply tick repellant (provided) and check your body daily, as Lyme disease is prevalent in the region. The barn behind the building contains equipment and materials that could be hazardous and so is best avoided. Parking for guests is available in the rear of the building. Other things to note • PHONE: The signal strength for mobile phones is poor both in the house and in town. Text messages may go through, but calls will likely not. Please enable WiFi calling on your cell phone so you can make calls, especially in an emergency. There is also an internet-based landline that guests can use. • PETS: We regret that none of our furry friends, even those who serve in an official capacity, will be permitted to enter the house on account of the owner’s severe, and potentially fatal, allergic asthma. For those guests with dogs, a wonderful boarding option is available just 8 miles from the house at Dog Mountain Lodge. • CHILDREN: The original railings on both the front porch and inside the house along the open staircase are very short by today’s standards and may be unsafe for children. There are also no removable safety gates available for either the indoor or outdoor stair cases. Some household cleaning products are stored under the sink. The hot-water radiators can be hot to touch when in use. • OLD HOUSE QUIRKS: Although several aspects of the house have been fully renovated (e.g., the bathrooms), others have been retained, such as the original floorboards for both the downstairs and the staircase. Expect them to creak! Also owing to the house's age are cracks and crevices, which during certain times of the year, fail to keep out nature's abundance—particularly lady bugs and boxelder beetles. We maintain a quarterly schedule for professional pest control treatment, but until further renovations can be made, some of these non-pesky pests may be found. Finally, water from the faucet of the upstairs soaking tub runs slightly rusty upon opening, but clears within seconds.
