Mithra Kamalam explores the fabled seventh ordeal of Rustom, the celebrated hero of the Persian epic “Shahnameh,” where he fights the white Div to protect his ruler and people from blindness and to free them from the dark prison of the demon. The artist transforms the figure of Rustom into a self portrait surrounded by a series of other hybrid and mythological characters. Mithra subversively interprets the fight into a dialogue on gender, body, position, relationships, power structures and individuation. “Corrective measures” is also a part of counter narratives where repetition of emotional objects serves as a therapeutic tool to heal disrepair. The extended body of work, sculptures and drawings in the gallery are metaphorically translating the facet of repetition and healing, where the idea of healing is at once public as well as deeply personal.
