The Handbuilthouse: The Studio

The Studio is a huge, sunny upstairs bed-sitter (36m2) with en suite bathroom tucked under the thatched eaves. It overlooks the front garden. It can be booked as a stand-alone (access via the main house) or together with Hoepoe Cottage when a 2nd bedroom is required. It has fibre WiFi & good security. It is suitable for short stays for a single, a couple or a family with young children (a cot or single bed can be added). The king bed can also be adjusted to 2 singles. The space The Studio is comfortable and tastefully furnished and equipped to suit guests every need. When booked on it's own The Studio does not have a kitchen available. When booked together with Hoepoe Cottage, full kitchen and dining facilities are available. Our thatched home is unique, warm, relaxed, open-plan, well-maintained and environmentally friendly. It is set in a beautiful treed garden with many bird & wetland inhabitants. Our legendary breakfasts (optional extra) are served from 6-9a.m. in our dining room or on the patio in summer. We built the house ourselves using many recycled materials from Joburg's early mining days, adding the cottages over the years. We have over 30 years experience of hosting many international visitors: business guests, tourists and exchange students. The garden is mostly indigenous, full of trees, ponds, birdlife and a haven from the bustle of city life. We grow our own organic vegetables, lemons and plums. Wake up in the morning to the Giant Kingfisher or Grey Heron fishing in the ponds or spot the Glossy Starlings or Crested Barbet at the bird feeder. After a dip in the pool at the end of a long day, enjoy sundowners on the patio to the chirp of frogs in the wetland. Guest access Our guests are welcome to relax on the patio, stroll around the garden, enjoy a swim in the pool, pick veggies or fruit or join us in the living room if they would like company. We light a log fire in the main house in winter. The garden is a paradise for active children with trees to climb, space to run and even an old tractor to take them on an imaginary journey. However, as our ponds are not netted the garden is unfortunately not suitable for children that are not thoroughly water-safe. During your stay The Handbuilt House is our home so we are happy to interact if desired and we love to chat and get to know people. However, we respect our guests' privacy and understand if they do not wish to interact. We love Jo'burg and its environs and we can suggest activities for guests to make the most of their visit. We serve breakfasts (optional extra) in our dining room or on the patio in summer. Other things to note Please ensure that you locate the right street as there are two streets with the same name in Bryanston! GPS gets our address WRONG! We ARE easy to find, but please follow carefully the directions we send you whether arriving in your own car or by Uber/taxi. Apart from our regular breakfast menu, we are able to cater for vegans, vegetarians and, on request, other dietary options. Please be sure to let us know of any specific requirements beforehand. We have one small, friendly dog who does inhabit the main house and large garden, but not the cottage. As this is our home it is not suitable for partying and "one night stands" are strictly forbidden.
