During the War of Independence (1808-1814), Hostalrich played a brilliant role in supporting the entry of food during the siege of Gerona and hindering the passage of enemy troops. That's why it was in the French interest to take the town. The town was looted and burned on November 7, 1809 by an army of 4,000 men. The French burned the entire village, and its inhabitants had to take refuge in neighboring villages. In January 1810 the French took the town and began a long siege of the castle. In 1963 both the castle and the walls were declared a Site of National Interest. The town of Hostalrich retains almost entirely one of the most remarkable monumental complexes of the Catalan medieval era and is presided over by the imposing military fortress of the modern era. The body of this rich architectural heritage is embodied in emblematic and unique elements such as the Torre de los Frailes, the Torre del Convento, the walled enclosure, the Portal de Barcelona, the Cueva del Relliguer and the Fortress. The soul of this monumental legacy is hidden among its stones and reveals a valuable historical memory: from the capital of Hostalrich over the extensive viscounty of Cabrera throughout the medieval period, through feudal struggles and civil wars until the War of Independence. There is a belief among the locals that the name comes from a very famous old hostel in the village. As Hostalric was an almost mandatory stop for travelers going to Barcelona from Gerona or vice versa, the hostel made large amounts of money and hence the Catalan ending "ric", which in Spanish means rich.
