Other things to note Villa Il Paradiso is located just a few kilometres from Pollença, an ancient city of captivating and narrow streets with a spectacular Plaza Mayor, surrounded by cafes, restaurants and bars, tourist centre of the north of the island. The town has several places of interest to visit, including the Roman bridge, signposted ‘Pont Roma’, which is still in use, and the Puig de Pollensa – a small mountain topped by a monastery, just outside the town. A visit to Pollensa has to include a walk to El Calvari hill. This straight flight of 365 steps ends at a church from the 18th century. The walk up is framed by cypresses and here and there you get a glimpse of small gardens and charming houses. Only a few kilometres away we will find Puerto Pollença, at the same time a port and tourist centre, especially popular with the English. It has good infrastructures, long beaches of fine sand and is a perfect corner for a family vacation. A visit to the north of Mallorca will not be complete without having visited the world-famous beach of Formentor and Cape Formentor, where the top end of the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range meets the Mediterranean. A windswept lighthouse stands on this promontory and, although it’s not open to visitors, you can walk around its rocky surroundings, looking out to the cliffs. You can also spot seabirds in their thousands during migration periods. The landscape from this steep road is absolutely spectacular. In this area there are two golf courses: Club de Golf Alcanada, north of Puerto Alcudia, with 18-hole golf course and Pollensa 9-hole golf course. If you like to go hiking, a good option is the picturesque Vall de Boquer in Puerto Pollensa or through the Sierra de Tramuntana in Pollensa, where this villa is located. GO TO THE BEACH: For beach lovers, you will find several nearby beaches. The beaches of Pollensa Bay are very different from each other but all share spectacular views. In the centre, the long beach of Llenaire offers a wide variety of water sports, to the south we find the beach of Can Cullerassa, where you will find a grove to shelter from the sun. To the north of the marina and backed by the Voramar Promenade, Albercutx beach forms a chain of small sandy beaches just a couple of steps from a clear and shallow water. The most famous of all, the beach of Formentor, with its pines is a magnificent beach with mountain views and offers good facilities (including the hotel). EAT OUT: The Plaza Mayor of Pollensa is full of restaurants and bars, with outdoor tables where you can enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and warm Mediterranean nights. There is also some Restaurant that uses organic products grown on its own farm for its dishes. In Puerto Pollensa there are many restaurants, cafes and bars that satisfy all tastes and budgets, and some offer memorable experiences. At the edge of the sea in the marina, you can take it from a tea or dine enjoying an excellent fish. Do not miss the Pollensa market on Sundays in the morning or the one in Puerto Pollensa on Wednesdays, which is more oriented to tourists, where local produce and handicrafts are offered. EVENTS IN POLLENÇA: Pollensa town is the location of a lively battle of Moors and Christians re-enactment every August. The ancient settlement of Pollensa is also renowned for an annual religious ceremony that draws crowds to this north Mallorca town. At Easter, on Good Friday, Pollensa attracts huge number of tourists for a moving and atmospheric religious event, which takes place on the Via Crucis, the 365-step stairway that leads up Calvary hill, in the north of the town. This is the festival of the ‘Davallament’, a Mallorcan passion play in which actors sensitively depict the suffering of Christ on the Cross and the lowering of his body, which is carried by torchlight down to the church in the square. The Santo Domingo Cloisters in the centre of town are the venue for open-air concerts every summer, as part of the Pollensa Music Festival. You’re also invited to step inside the cool, inviting interior of the cloisters for Mallorca’s largest wine fair, Fira del Vi (the wine fair), which takes place in spring, usually two weeks after Easter.
