HISTORY ■ Past ■ Present ■ Future This 1914 cottage started life in the Karangahake Gorge to house the gold miners and railway workers of the day. When the mining ceased it was re-located to Paeroa township. There are four little cottages in our street but ours has a dark secret. It's actually an imposter posing as a cottage! The truth is our cottage started life as a smaller miner's hut of just two rooms, a living/ sleeping area and a small kitchen. A railway hut in the garden was the bathroom with toilet, cast iron bath and a concrete laundry tub. Over time, two bedrooms and a bathroom were added, followed by a new roof giving it the grown-up look of a cottage. The hut now serves as a cycle shed for rail-trailers. We hope by renovating this little piece of NZ history it can have a future by being a nod to the past! Other things to note EV charging is in Marshall Street. Please visit the Caltex service station first on the main road to pay. Paeroa is well known for The Hauraki Rail Trail and L& P drink (famous in NZ), antique shops, art gallery and museum. Great cafes too! The perfect base for a few days exploring the Coromandel. WHAT TO DO The Ohinemuri River walk (opposite the cottage) takes about 10 minutes and is a lovely loop walk to do in the morning or evening. Walk along the river and then back through town completing the loop. For nature lovers, the beautiful Karangahake Gorge is a stone's throw away. Cycle along the iconic rail trail, ensuring that your holiday will be filled with exploration and fun. You can park and walk the scenic Windows Walk. Have lunch or coffee at Falls Retreat on the way. Enjoy easy trips to nearby townships like, Thames (historic mining town), Whangamata (coastal), Te Aroha (spa town), Waihi (mining town) or Waihi Beach, with Auckland, Tauranga and Hamilton also within comfortable travelling distance. Coromandel Township is a scenic coastal drive and well worth the visit if you have the time. Close to your accommodation: There is a small heated public swimming pool - I min walk. Great to relax after a day of cycling. Gym. On main road. 2 min walk. Paeroa Golf Course is a hidden gem that's reasonably priced and you can hire golf clubs. Each hole has great views to enjoy. The Shed If you like op shopping ask any local where The Shed is and they will direct you. Full of interesting vintage items for men and women. You can get lost in time for at least an hour!
