The space The bright and airy interiors of Villa Amalia blend modern luxury with selectively preserved elements of the original house. The grand proportions and architectural details of the large central open plan living room, dining room and kitchen are charming reminders of the room’s original use as a wine-storage canava during Santorini’s illustrious wine-making past. The pretty, self-catering kitchen features antique Moorish tile, Italian marble countertops and everything you need to feel right at home. It is fully equipped with refrigerator, cooktop, oven, small convenience appliances, cookware, china and cutlery. Each of the three ground floor bedrooms has its own entrance from the courtyard terrace and each has its own modern ensuite bathroom with built-in shower. Two large bedrooms have queen size beds and one bedroom has a single bed with a sleeping sofa. All have plenty of privacy. The cozy and private bedroom upstairs has direct access to a private terrace with amazing panoramic sea views. This bedroom has a sleeping sofa and ensuite bathroom with built-in shower. The private enclosed courtyard, with curving plaster walls in soothing earth tones and arches of volcanic stone is the perfect setting for dining al fresco under the stars or basking in the island sunlight. Houses here often served as summer homes for Oia’s residents, since they were more sheltered from the sun and the wind. The larger buildings in the village were wine-making canavas (large buildings which were used to press and store local wine.) Wine was the main product of the island for hundreds of years, prized around the world for the unique taste of the grapes that were grown in the volcanic soil of the fields surrounding the village. The wine that was made in Finikia was brought to the ships waiting at port below Oia.The vineyards here are still very actively producing wine to this day. Villa Amalia is an example of an historic canava. It was originally constructed by carving into the soft pumice-stone earth of the hills. This creates natural insulation, keeping the house comfortably cool and preserving the wine stored in barrels.
