Some notes about the city-if you are ready to negotiate the utter chaos that is Varanasi/Banaras be ready to witness the City which in the words of Mark Twain " is older than history, older than tradition, older than legend and looks twice as old as all of them put together!" And goes on to say "The Ganges front is the supreme show place of Benaras. Its tall bluffs are solidly caked from water to summit, along a stretch of 3 miles with a splendid jumble of massive and picturesque masonry , a bewildering and beautiful confusion of stone platforms, temples , stair flights, rich and stately palaces -nowhere a break......... And there is movement, motion, human life everywhere and brilliantly costumed- streaming in rainbows up and down the lofty stairways ...... at the river's edge." The ghats along the river Ganges are almost 10 km walk from one end to the other in a peaceful and serene atmosphere only interrupted by some busy ghats. On the opposite bank of the the Ganges is the beautiful white Sandy flatlands. Ghats are walkable in all season except for the monsoon season when the water level rises in the river Ganga. The ghats of Banaras are a heritage unique to this world where you can spend your entire day times and not feel bored. The evenings are enjoyable because of the spectacular evening Ganga Aartis. Walking is one of the ways to enjoy the ghats. The other way which I think is a must is experiencing the river and its ghats by taking a boat ride. The sunrise boat ride , the afternoon and evening boat rides give you various facets of the ghats the river and life along the river. Sarnath also known as the Deer park is a must historical place to visit. This is the place where Gautam Buddha preached his first sermon to his first five disciples- starting the Dhamma chakra- the wheel of religion. The imposing ancient Dhammek Stupa , the Buddhist monastery ruins , the many Buddhist temples built by different nationalities and the museum are worth seeing. Other places to visit are Banaras Hindu University, Bharat Mata temple (actually a National monument) , the Ramnagar fort, and various temples in and around the city. The Alamgir mosque or the Dharahra mosque at the Panchganga Ghat is a quiet place to have a bird's eye view of all the ghats and the river flowing alongside. Along with other things Banaras is famous for its Banarasi paan ( betel leaf chewed with various sweet condiments or various sweet smelling tobacco) and traditional sweets (mithai)and sweet meats of dozens of bewildering mouth watering variety. Banarasis- the people of Banaras , also take pleasure in having the famous Puri sabzi and sweet jalebis for breakfast. There are many famous places for lassi, rabri ,malaiyo and traditional white butter- all milk products. Banaras is also famous for traditional handmade products like papad (seasoned crunchy flatbread made of various flours and spices) , Achar (pickles) and murabba ( traditional jams). Being a traditional old city you will also find here shops selling Itr or Itra- sweet smelling perfumed oil extracted from the flowers, roots, herbs and shrubs. Banaras is also famous as a silk weaving centre with several big neighbourhoods engaged in silk weaving. There are big markets of silk fabrics, sarees and garments. Banaras is one of the ancient most living cities of the world. It has a culture and lifestyle of its own. Banarasi phakkarpan or the carefree lifestyle of its people is very unique and worth experiencing.
