Gelly, Dylan Thomas paradise.
Gelly, Dylan Thomas paradise.
Description
"Just like staying in a National Trust property!" said a recent guest. In fact the Georgian front of Gelli was designed by John Nash, just like the National Trust property, Llanerchaeron, down the road, in both cases, added to an older existing farmhouse complete with walled garden and farmyard complex. Gelli is smaller, but no less beautiful, and the sweeping carriage circle and 'ha-ha', carefully planned trees, now in full 200+ year glory, and charming gatehouse all add charm and elegance. The space Gelly is like nowhere else, with a unique charm all of its own. Hidden from the road, it stands alone in the midst of its 72 acres of land, silent and gently majestic, overlooking the trees and parkland envisioned by John Nash's careful eye. The Guest room, like the rest of the house, was carefully furnished in keeping with the place. The enormous Hepplewhite four-poster bed is comfortable, cosy and luxurious. The en suite bathroom has no shower, but the lovely long bath looks out over garden and fields.. The Music Room, available for your exclusive use, is as conducive to creative work as it is to a cosy evening by the fire. Very quiet, the long refectory table can easily become a writing desk once breakfast is cleared away, and the Seiler grand piano is kept tuned and is available for practice or composition. Though part of a family home, the family lives principally in the older wing of the house, so it feels very much as if you have the manor house to yourselves. You will be unheard and undisturbed. Whether you're looking for romance or history, beauty or quietude, the Muse, or just some quiet focus, you should be able to find it here. In a heatwave, the house is always refreshingly cool, with no need for air conditioning. Central heating, a log fire and electric blanket in the bed will keep you warm in winter. A simple, healthy breakfast is provided, including locally baked sourdough bread and homemade marmalade and there is a small fridge and microwave. Although unsuitable for very young children due to the delicate antique furniture, older children and babes in arms are no problem. Please ask if you require an extra mattress. Guest access Access is through some narrow but passable iron gates beside the thatched lodge, down the front drive, over the stream to the house. If your vehicle is large or you are at all concerned about the narrow gates, there is an alternative driveway without such obstacles just a few yards further along the lane. You can park right outside the yellow front door, which you will have to yourself as the family uses an alternative entrance. The door is wide, with one step. During your stay I hope to be there to greet you when you arrive, though self check-in is no problem. A connecting door separates the two ends of the house, adding to your privacy; however I will be available when needed and if a knock doesn't find me, the phone or a message should do the trick. Other things to note The house, being made of stone, is cool even in the hottest heatwave. Air conditioning is not required, but please bring a warm layer even in summer. Central heating and a log fire keep it warm in winter. While advertised as a no-smoking B&B I once, ironically, had a complaint about the smell of cigarette smoke. My elderly mother, frail but forthright as she is, cannot be persuaded to kick the habit and while every effort is made to keep the house smelling fresh, sweet and tobacco-free, it is well that you know the risk in advance. It is greatly appreciated if guests remove their shoes before entering the bedroom upstairs.
