Guesthouse in Sant'Apollinare
Casale Monticchio
Description
Two adjoining barns gave us 120sqm to form this guest house. Where possible, we have left all the stone walls exposed so there is a warm atmosphere throughout the year. Once upon a time was a mezzanine level in one of the barns so we reinstated it to create the second sleeping area above what is now the living room. With the help of a local blacksmith, we were able to make a 4m high single door, linking the terrace to the living room. The space Set in the heart of Umbria, our 18th century farm, which is listed as of ‘historical importance’, has been carefully restored over the past 15 year. The woods on either side of the valley are also protected for the wildlife. Monticchio is perched on a small hill with the Nestore river running below. There is a feeling of complete isolation yet we are only 5 minutes from local amenities, Our aim is create a unique experience while staying with us and to share the joys that Umbria has to offer. The property consists of 3 spacious apartments and the main house. There is also a secluded infinite pool (20m by 5m) with a terrace which overlooks the valley. Our aim while designing, was that each apartment would have its own individual character, a place where our guests would look forward to returning to after a long day of exploring or lying by the pool. They are furnished with special pieces we have collected over a long period of time and each object has a story attached to it, which we are always happy to share. We’re always encouraging guests to tell us if they feel something is missing or if there is a way we could improve the accommodation Happy memory: a few years ago we decided to make a meal, the old fashion way, using the old bread oven which is attached to the barns. Alfonso who lives nearby and a great cook agreed to come down and help. The clients, Klaus and Mone , were game for this adventure. The roast pork and pizza were a great success. What none of us had appreciated was the high temperatures involved and that the fabric of the building absorbed this heat. So in the middle of August Klaus and Mone had to deal with a 5m high wall radiating heat for two days!Happy memory: a few years ago we decided to make a meal, the old fashion way, using the old bread oven which is attached to the barns.
