Renovated top to bottom in 2023 with refinished wood floors, central air conditioning and new appliances. Beautiful covered porch with rocking chairs and ceiling fan. Two comfortable bedrooms with plenty of drawers and closet space share a full bath with a vanity and shower. You will open the door to find a space that is inviting, comfortable and exceptionally clean. History of this building: Built in the mid-nineteenth century, this was the workshop of stair maker Bronson Vaughan, brother of noted Saratoga architect Frelin Vaughan. Many of the beautiful staircases in Saratoga’s grand hotels were built here. The building had a wood stove and indoor plumbing, and there’s evidence that Mr. Vaughan’s residence was on the second floor. The building was converted to a livery stable in the late 1890’s by John and Carrie Welch, who built the house in front of it on Woodlawn Avenue. From 1900 to 1959 the first floor of the Welch barn also served as the public polling place for voters in the first election district of Saratoga Springs. At the turn of the 21st century the building was in serious disrepair due to neglect. The roof had partially collapsed into the second floor, and the building had developed a significant lean toward the alley, a trace of which is still noticeable. Heavy structural repairs were made in 2004, and the building was saved. We acquired the property in 2015 without seeing the inside of the second floor. We were thrilled to discover a charming apartment, and after a light refresh we opened it up to our Airbnb guests. It earned many positive reviews and quickly elevated us to superhost status. During the Covid pandemic of 2020 we began a major renovation of the building, bringing it up to current codes and adding the timber frame carport and second floor covered porch. We reopened it to our guests in July 2023. Guest access The second-floor carriage house is accessed from a quiet lane lined with carriage houses that once served the beautiful mansions of North Broadway. It has a private entrance with off street parking for two cars. There is also plenty of free parking on Woodlawn Avenue. Please pay attention to the signs for alternate side parking rules on Woodlawn. Other things to note If you would like an early check-in or a late check-out, please ask. If we don’t have back to back bookings, we are happy to offer our guests a little extra time on either end of their trip. We do not charge extra for this, but please understand we will not know if it is possible until the day before your scheduled arrival or departure.
