Our county has a marvelous network of ancient trails for walking, hiking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing (we are happy to lend a couple of pairs if needed). All of this begins over the stone wall in the meadow right behind the cottage. In the village of Reading you will find the town library, post office, and a greenhouse /farm stand with fresh produce, flowers, local meats and cheeses, wine and treats. Five miles away, down Route 44 is the Brownsville Butcher and Pantry which sells fresh seafood, meats, wines and groceries. We provide a guide to such places on your arrival. The area also offers skiing, hiking, swimming, and pick-your-own apples, pumpkins, and berries, depending on the time of year. Nearby ski areas include Mt. Ascutney, Okemo, Killington, Pico and Suicide Six. The GMHA (Green Mountain Horse Association) is a 10 minute drive, and 10 minutes in another direction will take you to Ascutney Mountain and a small community owned ski hill. The surrounding towns of Brownsville, Weathersfield, Woodstock, Quechee, Ludlow, Windsor, and Springfield feature restaurants, shops and other entertainment . The Upper Valley is 45 minutes away.
