The Arizona Trail - Patagonia is a Gateway Community for the Arizona Trail. Patagonia Lake State Park is a hidden treasure, tucked away in the rolling hills of southern Arizona. The parkwas established in 1975 and is an ideal place to find whitetail deer roaming the hills and great blue herons walking the shoreline. A campground overlooks a 265-acre man-made lake where anglers catch crappie, bass, bluegill, and catfish. Trout is stocked every three weeks from October through March. The tracks of the New Mexico/Arizona railroad lie beneath the lake and remnants of the old historic line may be found at the Nature Conservancy in Patagonia and on the town’s “RR Trail.”.Hikers can stroll along the beautiful creek trail and see a variety of birds such as the canyon towhee, Inca dove, vermilion flycatcher, black vulture, and several species of hummingbirds. The park offers a beach, picnic area with ramadas, tables & grills, a creek trail, boat ramps, a marina, and a market. There is a campground, boat-in camp sites, restrooms, showers, and a dump station. The Lakeside Market offers boat rentals, fishing licenses, bait, ice, and more. At two and a half miles long, Patagonia Lake is popular for a variety of recreational activities, including water skiing, fishing, camping, picnicking, and hiking. Rent a canoe or a rowboat for the day, or bring your own boat and enjoy Patagonia Lake State Park. Nature Conservancy’s Patagonia-Sonoita Creek Preserve The Preserve is one of the best-known and most popular places for birding in the U.S. More birders have seen their first gray hawks here than anywhere else. The streamside or riparian habitat found along Sonoita Creek contains some of the richest habitat remaining in Southern Arizona. More than 300 species migrate, nest, and live in this critical habitat and bird enthusiasts come thousands of miles to catch a glimpse of some of them. Of particular interest are the gray hawk, vermilion flycatcher, violet-crowned hummingbird, thick-billed kingbird, zone-tailed hawk, green kingfisher, white-throated sparrows (in winter) and black-bellied whistling duck. Violet-Crowned Hummingbird. Even if you can’t tell a bluebird from a blue jay, the Preserve still offers something for you. Three miles of easy walking trails take you along Sonoita Creek and through rare cottonwood and willow forest. The peace that comes from relaxing under 140 year-old cottonwood trees will bring you one step closer to nature. The Paton Center for Hummingbirds is a place to explore and experience the special birds of southeast Arizona. It is dedicated to the celebration and conservation of hummingbirds—and all of southeast Arizona’s astounding biodiversity—through recreation, education, and sustainable living. More than 212 bird species have been reported for this cozy home lot on the outskirts of Patagonia, including Violet-crowned Hummingbirds, Gray Hawks, Varied Buntings, Green-tailed Towhees, Thick-billed Kingbirds, and many more local specialties. Gates are open dawn to dusk. Entry is free of charge … Your stay, your way: a lot or a little interaction, it's up to you. Need insider scoop on touring the local wineries? Got U covered.
