Description

One mile from Smith Rock State Park & 30 minutes from Bend, Fallen Snag Lodge will be your very own private nature preserve. A wrap around deck faces the Marsupial rock formations & Crooked river, with lounge chairs set to view hawks, turkey vultures & eagles during the day & for stargazing at night. Ideal for couples or a family wanting to get away from it all in a beautifully appointed, comfortable lodge set in central Oregon's magnificent high desert landscape. The space I originally purchased Fallen Snag eighteen years ago because of my love of climbing & it's proximity to Smith Rock State Park. But over time, I have come to embrace what Terry Tempest Williams evokes in her poem Wild Mercy: "To protect what is wild is to protect what is gentle. Perhaps the wildness we fear is the pause between our own heartbeats, the silent space that says we live only by grace. Wilderness lives by this same grace. Wild mercy is in our hands." Living as I do in the Seattle area, it's a pleasure to share this wonderful refuge with like minded others. The lodge has two separate, private bedroom suites, each w/ a Queen sized bed & its own private bathroom & shower, and sliding door access to the deck or patio. There is also a smaller study w/ a sofa & extra chair. It has sliding opaque glass doors that can be closed off for more privacy. In a pinch, the sofa can accomodate one additional, reasonably flexibile guest. The gourmet kitchen has a gas fired stove & oven, frig, dishwasher & is fully furnished w/ pots & pans, cooking utensils & a complete set of dishes, glasses & cutlery for up to 6 people. The dining room seats 4, while the adjacent kitchen countertop seats 3. The living room comes w/ a sofa, 2 easy chairs, and a high efficiency compact Norwegian wood stove. Well water is filtered & purified. The house is well insulated and as of March 12, 2025 is now heated & cooled with a fully functioning, state of the art, energy efficient heat pump!!! Guests have access to a powder room (across from the front door entrance) through which there is a door to the utility room. A washer/dryer in the alcove next to the dining room are accessible via sliding doors. There is adequate parking in the driveway roundabout. Guest access The cabin is a short 1 mile drive from the Smith Rock State Park trailhead via a private, winding dirt road. Drivers need to observe the 15 mph speed limit on that road to help reduce ambient dust and keep neighbors happy. Guests should plan on arriving during daylight hours since there are no streetlights and the lodge is much harder to find at night. Other things to note While there is no TV, internet access, or DVD player, you can set up a cell phone hot spot to activate a compact wireless speaker on the kitchen counter. Free wifi is available at the Redpoint Climbers Supply shop nearby in Terrebonne . The lodge has a selection of books, magazines & brochures with information on nearby attractions in Smith Rock, Redmond & Bend. Fallen Snag makes it easy to take a break from the noise & stress of everyday life. Tune into your beautiful surroundings, relish the quiet of nature and enjoy the company of the ones you're with.
