Welcome to the Artsy Studio at Culbertson House, a renovated and restored one-room apartment with historic charm. Inspired by our area's rich artistic traditions, we have filled it with artworks, including works by Julia, the owner. A single room, the apartment features a big, romantic stone fireplace, tasteful, comfortable furnishings, plentiful art and tasteful, artsy decor, full kitchen, 55" TV, and a deliciously comfortable king-size bed, all in a private yet convenient location. Julia and David, your hosts, are delighted to welcome you to the Artsy Studio in the Culbertson House in Brattleboro! Inspired by the rich artistic traditions and countless working artists in the Brattleboro area we recently redecorated the studio to reflect the creativity of our community. It's not exactly a gallery, or an artist's studio, it's just Artsy. We hope you'll enjoy viewing the paintings and objets d'art we have on display; perhaps you'll bring your paints and create a masterpiece while you're here! Unique and a little quirky, beloved by the resident-owners and dozens of guests alike, the house occupies a rare space in Brattleboro, a spot that is quiet and peaceful and on the edge of the forest, yet close to all major thoroughfares. We are 1.5 miles from downtown Brattleboro, with its offerings of fine dining, unique shopping, diverse cultural entertainment and funky nightlife. The major ski areas of Mt. Snow and Stratton are within a 40 minute drive, and summer recreation possibilities abound. In the 1950's the house belonged to the legendary Ely Culbertson- the "father of American Contract Bridge" and author of many books on bridge as well treatises on world peace and utopian world government. He was a character! After his death the house was split into three apartments, as it is today. We live in the large central apartment and the other two are airbnbs. The beautiful wood-paneled walls, warm hardwood floors, view of the gardens, full bath, tasteful decor and a modern kitchen area make this space unique, welcoming and warm. The apartment's location is ideal; the forest behind and beside the house gives a feeling of being in a quiet, secluded home in the woods, yet the apartment is only a half-mile from Interstate 91 and a few hundred yards from Rt.9, the main east-west state highway leading to western Vermont and New Hampshire. We have always been pet-friendly here, and we've met many wonderful furry friends. For doggies, you can walk directly from the house through the backyard and into the woods. We have marked a little path through the woods around the property that also leads to the nearby brook, and there are many trails through the forest should you and your pooch want a longer hike. We are proud of our flower gardens which surround the house, including herbs and vegetables growing right outside your door; feel free to pluck some parsley or pick a tomato or two for your dinner! There's also a lovely place to sit outside for dining al fresco, and we provide a Weber charcoal grill so you can grill a steak or throw some shrimps on the barbie. The bustling, artsy town of Brattleboro is only 1.5 miles down the road. Just steps away, literally a five-minute walk, is Brattleboro's renowned Farmers' Market, operating on Saturdays from May to October, with fresh local produce, wonderful food stands and a rich selection of local arts and crafts. Five more minutes of walking will bring you to Living Memorial Park, with a summer swimming pool, skateboard park, a Frisbee golf course and other features, and nightly softball games under the lights. Nearby are incredible hiking trails (there are some great trails right behind the house), swimming holes, canoe rentals, a terrific 18-hole golf course, and Brattleboro's bustling downtown, where you'll find unique shopping and fine dining (we've got lots of recommendations, from the tender ribs at the Top of the HIll grill to the exquisite gourmet fare of Peter Havens.) We renovated the apartment with vacation rentals in mind; unlike many airbnb rentals it is dedicated solely to our guests and you're free to make the space your own. There's private parking and a welcoming, homey feel to the space that we're sure you'll enjoy. We do provide all the modern conveniences, including a dishwasher and large microwave, high-speed wifi internet, and a TV equipped with a Roku stick with open accounts for Netflix and Hulu. We look forward to meeting you and hope you enjoy your stay here at the Culbertson House! The Culbertson Studio is a fully equipped, independent apartment with kitchen, bathroom, its own private entrance and parking. Guests are free to roam the gardens (help pull weeds, if you're so inclined!) and pick a tomato or go for a walk in the woods! The owners live next door, so while there is complete privacy with your own entrance and parking we are also right there for any problems or questions or if you just want to join us for a beverage or a BBQ in the garden. Our studio is in a prime location in Brattleboro, near major thoroughfares and incredibly convenient yet secluded and quiet. Everything is close to here, but the same time it feels like you're living in the forest. The Culbertson House is steps away from the Brattleboro Farmers' Market and the many activities at Living Memorial Park, minutes from downtown Brattleboro. We're near a good 18-hole golf course, canoe rentals in the West River, and the funky and varied shops and restaurants of downtown Brattleboro are only a mile and a half away. Skiing and golf at Stratton or Mt. Snow are both about 40 minutes away. There is a small regional bus that will take you downtown or to some surrounding towns . The house, while in a quiet spot, is very close to the major thoroughfares of Rt. 9 and I-91. It is within walking distance to recreation facilities (swimming pool, tennis, softball fields, hiking and picnicking) and also you can walk to shopping and dining. It is a pleasant 20-minute walk to downtown Brattleboro. There is also a taxi service in Brattleboro, they say we even have Uber. One hundred years ago, the Culbertson House was built by a successful local dentist, building what was then a country estate west of the bustling town of Brattleboro, Originally a residence (our house) plus a guest house next to the brook, with a swimming pool, paths through the woods, bubbling fountains and a goldfish pond. The property was bought in 1946 by the world-famous "father of contract bridge" Ely Culbertson, who lived here until his death in 1955. Indeed, the street on which our house is located is named after the great card player and entrepreneur, who spent most of his time in our house writing treatises on world peace and a single world government, and working as a consultant to develop the League of Nations. Local developer Norman Chase purchased the property in the late fifties, adding an extension and dividing the Culbertson's house into three apartments, while at the same time building "Brookside," the pleasant development of condominiums and co-ops which lies next to our property. The house is composed of a one-room studio apartment, the one-bedroom which we offer here, and our two-bedroom apartment where we have lived for more than 10 years and raised our family. Also on the property is a single-family house with longtime tenants. The extensive, distinctive and luxurious flower garden which completely surrounds the house was created by the owner over the past ten years, and is an exceptional feature of the property in the summer months.
