Nature meets history just a stone's throw from the Mystic River and walkable (a bit over a mile) to downtown's shops & grand houses! Comfy beds, breakfast staples, and home baking await at your private, fully equipped apartment on the quiet side of the Mystic River. Stroll, bike, or paddle to Main Street or explore Mystic Seaport and the aquarium. Minutes to the Sub Museum, Rhode Island's ocean beaches, New London, and the Coast Guard Academy! You'll be staying in an in-law apartment which is attached to our modest family home but has its own separate entrances, so you'll enjoy total privacy. The apartment has a kitchen with oven, stove, dishwasher, microwave, French press, fridge, and freezer for your use. Down the hall, you'll find a full bath with shower and a washer/dryer. Bedroom 1 has a full bed, a mini-dresser, and a walk-in closet. Bedroom 2 has a pair of twin beds, a closet, and a door to outside. There's also a full sofa bed in the living room. All rooms (except bathroom) have bamboo flooring. The TV in the living room is hooked up to Roku, and you'll have access to our Netflix, Amazon Prime, Acorn, BritBox, HBO, Sling, etc., subscriptions. There are board games, books, and more books at the "Little Lending Library" on the corner. You won't find anything mass-produced hanging on these walls, but instead an eclectic collection of vintage prints, found art, handcrafted creations, and paintings and ceramics created by my kids when they were little. :) You'll have access to the in-law apartment attached to our home. There's free parking for up to 4 cars our two driveways. The apartment's entire living space is at your disposal--that's living room, dining area, kitchen, bathroom, and two bedrooms. There's a tiny storage room and one closet reserved for our family's use, but the rest of the place is all yours! There's a patio behind the apartment (accessed by the kitchen door) that has table and chairs for your use in spring, summer, and fall. Feel free to walk around the rest of the property as well--our neighbor might just let you visit his chickens! Susan works from home, and is therefore accessible much of the time. Feel free to knock on the door of the main house or text Susan with questions, requests, or just to say hi. Directly across the street is a babbling brook which runs into a salt pond at the end of the block. Also at the end of the block: the majestic Mystic River, which is basically one big, gorgeous postcard. If you have a kayak, the boat launch is a 2-minute drive. If you like a good walk, the stroll into town is a lovely mile of river views and historic homes (be sure to explore the Peace Nature Sanctuary, which you'll find just 1/4 mile from the apartment). Not surprisingly, cyclists love this neighborhood! Bring your own bikes, or from May 1 - Nov. 1, you can use the Mystic Community Bikes ride share program, which offers convenient pick-up and drop off locations nearby for a $10 deposit. The Mystic Amtrak station (Northeast Corridor line) is about 2.5 miles from the apartment. As mentioned above, those who like walks of a mile or more can access restaurants, shops, the famous bascule bridge, Mystic River Park, Mystic Art Museum, and Bank Square Books on foot. Biking is even easier. You can also kayak across the river to the Mystic Seaport Museum. The Mystic Aquarium is best reached by car, but it's a very short drive--just one exit north of us on the interstate (we're exit 89, the aquarium is exit 90). Old Mistick Village, which houses artisan shops and Mystic Luxury Cinemas, is also off exit 90. We're on the Groton side of Mystic, which means you're a very short drive to the Submarine Museum and New London's attractions. Across the bridge is the Stonington side of Mystic. Stonington Borough is also a short drive away, and offers a unique charm and beauty of its own (as well as one of our favorite restaurants, Noah's). Our property is close enough to I-95 that we do pick up a bit of background sound. It's not blaring traffic like you'd find in a city location, and it's never kept us awake, but it's there. Should you need them, earplugs are provided in the amenities basket in the bathroom. We are committed to advancing bee conservation by cultivating a pollinator-friendly property. This means you WILL NOT be greeted by a perfectly manicured putting-green lawn upon arrival in the warmer months. Instead, you'll see our grass, pathways, and borders dotted with clover flowers, goldenrod, Queen Anne's Lace, Black-eyed Susans, and whichever other wildflowers (and yes, occasionally weeds) decide to spring up and attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. We do not use weed killers or pesticides of any kind and allow our grass clippings and autumn leaves to act as natural mulch, which the earthworms seem to appreciate. :) The vinyl siding that came with the house is somewhat long in the tooth and gives it a bit of a faded-around-the-edges look (for the moment!). A future project is to remove the siding and --fingers crossed--rehab the nifty 1950s cedar shingling underneath. :)
