Close to the Grand Island Mansion and Grand Island Vineyards. Stay here while on a wine tour of the Delta or be within two miles of the mansion for a wedding. The apartment is right on Steamboat Slough and a quarter mile from Steamboat beach. Just 10 minutes up the river road and you are at the popular Sugar Mill in Clarksburg. You’ll love my place because of you can enjoy a nice glass of wine while taking in a beautiful Delta sunset from the deck that overlooks the slough. The apartment has one bedroom with a queen bed and ensuite and a bunk bed room off the back deck. No dock or beach access on property The property is set on the waterside of a levee on Steamboat Slough in a sparsely populated agricultural area in the beautiful and unique Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Mind you this is not an exhaustive list of all the Delta has to offer but these are some of our favorite places within a 15-minute drive. TO EAT: Chuy’s Tacos – Everyone has their opinion on taco trucks. In our opinion, this is the best one. Cross Steamboat Bridge (yellow drawbridge near the apartment) and then cross the next yellow drawbridge, Paintersville Bridge, and it’s on the right. They are cash only and aren’t there on Sundays so plan accordingly. If you need cash there is an ATM at F&M Bank in Walnut Grove, there is also an ATM at nearby Courtland Market. Our personal favorites are carnitas burritos or lengua (tongue) tacos. Courtland Market – Located 5 minutes away in the town of Courtland. Go there if you need any basic grocery item. Most importantly, they have food counter in the back where you can order sandwiches, burritos, tortas, etc. We love the breakfast burritos (served until 11am) and some Hemly Pear Cider (local product). Accepts credit cards!! Mel’s Mocha – Great little place in Walnut Grove if you have a hankering for coffee or Sacramento’s famous Gunther’s ice cream! Locke Garden – Chinese food, dine in or take out. They are open until 9 which is important because many places out here close relatively early. Great Chow Fun. Don’t forget to check out Locke while you are there. Ko-ket Resort – Just south of Walnut Grove on the east side of the Sacramento River. The Riverfront Bar and Grill is open Thursday to Sunday. Great outside dining right on the river! TO TASTE: Hemly Cidery – Take in a breathtaking view and sip on some amazing local handcrafted cider out of a re-vamped airplane hanger. Open 11-5 Friday to Sunday. About two minutes east as the crow flies, five minute drive. Highly recommended! Grand Island Vineyards - Walk out the front door and there it is! Take a picnic out there, they have yard games! Croquet anyone? Bogle Vineyards – One of the most famous wines from the Delta. Bogle’s tasting room is located on the levee next to Elk Slough. Look up directions online or look for their pheasant logo as you head north on River Road towards Clarksburg. The Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is our favorite! Old Sugar Mill – Located in Clarksburg, about 15 minutes north from Steamboat on River Road. If you really want to get your wine tasting on, head here. They have a bunch of wineries in one location. Our favorite winery is Kirchhoff Wines. Silt Wine Company – Has a beautiful tasting room just past Clarksburg, off Jefferson on Babel Slough Road TO PLAY: Steamboat Landing – The beach located on the other side of Steamboat Slough near the bridge is the only beach around. Tim, the owner, will periodically come down to the beach to collect payment, $5 per person. There is no lifeguard on duty so swim at your own risk. Al the Wops – Located in the historic Chinese town of Locke. A must see! Tucked away among old leaning buildings this bar is a fun place to get some real local flavor. Also, the “Al’s Burger” served on sourdough bread is killer. Delta Kayak Adventures – Want to explore the sloughs? Kathy knows all the cool spots. The Delta is a beautiful and sometimes funky place. Due to the many sloughs and bridges it is possible to get lost. Map apps are not perfect and cell reception, while majorly improved, can be iffy. If that happens and you don’t have service, don’t hesitate to stop and ask for directions. The locals are used to it. Car is the best method of transport. Uber/Lyft/Taxi can come out here but it will cost you because the nearest urban/suburban area is Elk Grove about 20 minutes northeast.
