Description

Peace, Privacy and History in a Magical Setting! Manoir du Mur is situated in the serene countryside yet located in the center of everything that Brittany has to offer. The seaside village of Carnac, the Medieval cities of Vannes, St Malo and Dinan, the infamous 'Mont St. Michel' are all a short distance away. Charming historic villages such as Josselin, Malestroit, Rochefort-en-Terre and La Gacilly (home to France's largest outdoor photography exhibit) draw you back to a simpler time. The space Imagine traveling the same paths of the Knights of old, through picturesque villages such as ‘Le Temple’, Brittany’s center of activity for the Knights Templar, and just minutes from Le Mur. The idyllic and pastoral surroundings make you feel as though you must be moving through the work of a renowned Artist. Finally arriving at the highest point in the surrounding countryside you move down a long path of majestic fir trees along what was once the ancient Roman Road. At its end sits the inviting hamlet that is ‘Manoir du Mur’. These captivating stone structures built over the 13th to 15th centuries make up what was once a Medieval hamlet and still exist today as ‘Manoir du Mur’ and its adjacent out-buildings. This historic site has been lovingly renovated in keeping with its architectural and historical integrity, while at the same time offering 21st century amenities. Manoir du Mur now includes 4 fully furnished ‘themed’ self-catering apartments, a medieval Dining Room/Hunter's Lodge, an 'Assembly Room' with stage, cinema, and fully equipped kitchen for catering, an ancient outdoor bread oven, an artist studio and a 'Knight's Chamber'. When renting the Manoir in its entirety, whether it be for a retreat, a corporate conference, to run a workshop or for a family wedding celebration or reunion, all of the above mentioned facilities are included. Guest access Le Mur' (The wall) is a privately owned 181 acre estate situated on the highest peak in the surrounding countryside, and is a historic site recognized by the French Government. What was at one time a Medieval hamlet (and still exist today as the Manoir and adjacent out-buildings), was sat along-side the ancient 'Roman Road'. Historic ruins on the site include a Roman earth berm (wall) built for observation and protection for the Roman soldiers whom utilized the site as a military camp, foundations of an amphitheater, and a chariot drive. The remains of two medieval forts and moats have also been discovered on the property. Located in the bucolic countryside, Le Mur is central to everything Brittany has to offer, from large Medieval towns on both the Channel and Atlantic Coasts, to lovely touristic villages just minutes away. As guests of Le Mur, enjoy an afternoon picnic under the shade of the ancient Roman Arch (at one time the entry to the hamlet), hike along the numerous wooded paths, romp through fields of wild flowers to feed and play with the miniature pony and Ouessant sheep (the smallest breed of sheep in the world), read a book or simply nap under a canopy of trees in the apple, peach and pear orchards. The Medieval 'Hunter's Lodge' located within the Medieval Manoir, is a place to get 'online' or to play board games with family and friends. Le Mur offers an 'English Library' available to all guests of Le Mur, as well as ample free parking, use of a Barbecue Grill and picnic areas. 'The Medieval Catering Kitchen'; 'Medieval Assembly Hall' are available when you rent the entire Manoir. The property can also be rented in its entirety, and can hold up to 50+ guests making it a comfortable place for corporate and family retreats. Other things to note Ernest and Teresa Monaco, the American owners of Chateau Le Mur, have a had a long history together of joining a romantic, theatric, and creative Spirit. Married for thirty some odd years, (they have now lost count) they have lived a life of adventure traveling the world collecting interesting artifacts and experiences. Having met in Chicago while Ernie was studying Urban Planning, and Terry Graphic Design, they set out to conquer the world. After settling war refugees in Chicago, feeding the homeless in Philadelphia, renovating tumble down houses in California, they finally set out with their two kids to the tiny but wealthy nation of Qatar. While there, Ernie helped design and manage a city on water, and Terry taught at an American University, wrote and directed comedic, musical plays while at the same time together managing a Christian youth group and underground church. They have had the opportunity to travel the world and have met many precious people from all walks of life, learning along the way that life can be extremely wonderful—and at the same time very, very challenging. Therefore they have created Chateau Le Mur to be a magical, peaceful haven from the world, and invite you to come share in what they have created here. From a fairy-like castle filled with treasures collected from all over the globe to the whimsical ‘Rapunzel's Tower’, ‘The Knight’s Chambre’, ‘The Fairy Room’ and ‘The Dark Enchanted Forest’ to the fabled personages who ‘at one time lived in the manoir’ they've created a place that calls to the child in all of us.
