Other things to note From the village, there are marked trails that pass through the Mediterranean scrub to archaeological sites and ancient goat farms. The nearby Marina di Campo has a supermarket, bookstores, excellent boutiques, a sailing school, agencies that organize boat trips around the island, and trips to the island of Pianosa. For special adventures, contact "il Viottolo" (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) or Umberto Segnini's econauta (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN)). The famous beaches of Cavoli (1 km) and Fetovaia (3 km) are also easily accessible. In Cavoli and Fetovaia you can play tennis, and near Portoferraio, at Acquabona, there is an excellent golf course. Near Portoferraio there are also the famous TERME DI SAN GIOVANNI. Also near Portoferraio, on the road that leads to Porto Azzurro, there is an interesting ARCHAEOLOGICAL AREA with the remains of a ROMAN VILLA that enjoys a splendid view of the Gulf of Portoferraio. Don't miss a visit to the Rio mines from where iron minerals were extracted. Also in Punta Calamita, near Capoliveri, you can visit a mine where a guide accompanies you along the paths of the miners and where you can learn about their tiring life, on which the economy of Elba was based until about fifty years ago. The mineralogical museum is very interesting both in Punta Calamita and in San Piero in the municipality of Campo nell'Elba. Also in San Piero, an Astronomical Observatory has recently been set up, which I am told is very interesting, especially because the sky in Elba is clear and the Milky Way is very visible. There are also interesting ancient Romanesque churches, such as the church of S. Stefano alle Trane, in Magazzini, the church of San Giovanni, without a roof, and the tower of the same name, on the road that goes from San Ilario to Monte Perone, S. Maria del Monte, above Marciana, the monastery of Santa Caterina in Rio, and the Madonna del Monserrat in Porto Azzurro... The September music season is important in Portoferraio, during which famous international musicians perform at the Teatro dei Vigilanti (on the website you can find out about the program for the current year).
