The perfect romantic hideaway, Lantern Cottage takes you back in time - but with 21st century amenities. Set in the beautiful Warwickshire countryside, it's still only 15 minutes from Stratford-upon-Avon and ideally located for touring the Cotswolds. Lantern Cottage will take you back in time with its inglenook fireplace and huge woodburner (FREE logs), exposed beams, antiques and curtains drawn against the cold - or the heat. It's wooden beams everywhere apart from the kitchen, which has all the white goods you could want but in stainless steel! There are basic foodstuffs in their kitchen, including condiments and oils. There will be milk in the fridge and coffee, tea, biscuits and chocolate on the side. When the weather is fine, you can eat in the pretty walled garden under an umbrella to the sound of a wall fountain. You will have the cottage to yourself. It is set in a tiny hamlet of seven houses, and you reach the cottage from a very short (thirty paces) communal path. Just past the cottage, there is a shed with logs and kindling most of the year, which you're welcome to use, and a rotary airer. It's not locked, because we have country ways. But do lock the cottage up! You collect the keys and let yourself in (the instructions are in my final-details letter to guests), but I am always there at the end of a phone, and my concierge lives 10 minutes away. So, if there are any problems - they happen in the best households - we can sort them out between us. No problem unresolved to date! It is a tiny hamlet in Old Marlcliff, where there's no street lighting. So, you can see the stars really clearly. You wake up to birdsong, and can follow the public footpath to the River Avon and Bidford one way (20 minutes), and a lane to the lock, the other (10 minutes). It's a very lovely rural setting - but within easy access of Stratford for the theatre (15 minutes by car) and Cheltenham (45 minutes). The epicentre of the Cotsworlds, it's a perfect starting point for touring the picturebook towns, stately homes and superb gardens. There's a bus stop at the top of the lane, where you can catch a leisurely country bus. The nearest station is Evesham (12.8km) and Birmingham Airport is 83 km away. There are also two local car hire firms. All the transport and other details, including places to visit, cafes, restaurants and pubs are listed, complete with addresses and postcodes on a pdf, which is emailed to you shortly before your arrival with the final details for accessing the keys etc. The cottage is not suitable for anyone with mobility issues or for babies and toddlers, as the very old staircase is twisting and has uneven steps. There is no garage or reserved parking, as the cottages easily pre-date cars, but you can park outside along The Bank. The most you will have to walk from your car, if you are unlucky, is three minutes. My minimum booking is three days except during July and August and over Christmas, when it is a week.
