I'd sipped coffee at my beachside cabin while watching the sun glint off the Olympics. Now, on one of the coldest, grayest, wettest mornings of the year for the rest of the NW, here I was walking along a cloudless, sun-filled stretch of tideland known as Maxwelton Beach, watching a stranger chase his yellow Lab in and out of the surf as if it were mid-September. It seemed a world away from Seattle - yet close enough I could be back, if I wanted, in time for lunch. For Seattle-area residents looking for a winter weekend getaway they can reach without actually going far, it's hard to top Sunset Beach Cottage. Tucked inside the rain shadow of the Olympics, Whidbey Island can seem like a veritable desert oasis in winter, noticeably warmer and brighter, even, than towns just 20 miles away. Welcome to Sunset Beach Cottage in Maxwelton: Located near the island's southern tip, it promised sunset views of the Olympic Mountains and a private beach. And the owners were accommodating, promising to leave the key on the kitchen table and allowing me to check in at 7 am. While I'd learned over the years to do my homework and keep expectations low, Sunset Beach Cottage was a pleasant surprise. The rooms were carpeted and wood paneled, with a 1950's feel. The online pictures were a good representation - which isn't always the case. There were mountain views form the kitchen and the bedroom, and the beach was 10 feet from the door. The owners had left a long note suggesting everything from restaurants to a nearby golf course that charged $10 for nine holes. The closet was stocked with rubber boots for shell collecting and clam digging and slippers for the evenings. Any season is a wonderful time to escape to Sunset Beach Cottage with its quiet surroundings, miles of private beach to explore, a bird sanctuary outside your door and its unimpeded views of bay and mountains. Here is a place you can relax, have outdoor adventures, create food, soak in a big hot bath, just curl up and watch the eagles and great blue heron interacting on the beach. The cabin has custom knotty pine, wood wall covering and carpeted floors original art and a decadent Tempurpedic king size bed master suite. The space is ideal for two, but an additional couple can be accommodated on a queen size sofa bed in the living area. And two more can sleep in the 2nd tiny bedroom with a twin and a trundle. Wi-fi, DVD player, NetFlix instant play and cable (website hidden): Full kitchen with the original 1949 kitchenette and all the usual amenities. Patio: There is a barbecue for the patio with padded chairs and fire pit, beachside, 10 feet from the sand. Sunset Beach Cottage is a beach comber's, artist's, clam digger's, writer's, wind surfer's, kayaker's, cyclist's, bird watcher's paradise. Or, simply unwind with a good book and a cup of tea. Available for the day, weekend, week or month. Pets must be disclosed prior to booking. There is a prior approval required and $100 minimum and a $40 per night per pet fee, whichever is more. Other things to note Must advise upon inquiry that you are bringing pets with number of pets, ages and type. Pets are $40/pet/night: Add each pet as an extra person (beyond 2 ppl) and the reflected price will be correct. Pets and extra people (above 2 ppl) are the same price. See Rules below, for pets. For Summer weekly prices, put in your selected dates and the price will come up in the pricing for your booking. Bring your own kayak or inquire about our 2-seater kayak. Propane barbecue on premises. Extra boots for beach (some sized available in the attached shed); request buckets and shovel for clam digging or check the shed. Bring a crab pot for crabs. Fire pit has wood available and your first fire's kindling. Bring paper to start the fire and additional kindling you would need. In attached shed you will find: Washer/Dryer Large Trash Can Recycle Can (labeled - put all clean glass and aluminum only in blue recycle bin) (we sort and transport the recycling so sorting is helpful) Life vests Patio cushions Kindling Rubber boots Kids sand toys Additional toilet paper if you run out under the bathroom sink. I've had people occasionally ask how to turn on the water in the tub/shower. Answer: Pull. Firewood is located on the Norths side of the building: please be conservative in using the wood. Thermometer for heat is located in Master Bedroom, behind curtain for door. Light switches have dimmers located on the switch, to the side, that slide up and down.
