Description

2 Landgate is a charming, cosy cottage, which until recently was the residence of a well-known local artist. Set in the heart of historic Winchelsea town the house has been sensitively and tastefully renovated to retain the charm of an artist’s residence, but now with more modern facilities. The space THE COTTAGE Unassuming from the outside, once inside the cottage feels cosy and snug. 4 people are accommodated comfortably. Perched high above the surrounding salt marshes, the cottage boasts wonderful views across the Brede Valley towards the town of Rye, and is only a short distance from Pett Level beach. The setting is a perfect blend of stunning coast and countryside right on your doorstep. In summer, a large Magnolia tree blossoms directly outside the living room window, and wild strawberries grow around the front door. The south-facing rear garden is terraced to provide outside spaces to enjoy the sun and to eat, as the weather permits. The rear garden is well planted with a palm tree, European cypress trees and a majestic black bamboo. Right outside the front door of the cottage is Pipewell Gate, one of the Winchelsea town stone-built gates. This gate gave access to the ferry, when Winchelsea was a true port, and which was rebuilt after an attack from the French in 1404. ACCOMODATION The downstairs space As you enter, a comfy sofa and armchairs in the living room surround a wood-burning stove for cosy evenings (logs are provided). A new Samsung high definition SMART tv is installed. High speed Wi-Fi provides connectivity. There’s an oval Victorian mahogany table in the dining room providing comfortable space for communal eating, with seating for four people. In the newly refurbished and equipped kitchen there is a gas range cooker, a conventional fan oven and a dedicated fitted microwave oven, dishwasher and floor standing fridge / freezer. You’ll find a few essentials to get your going (tea, coffee, olive oil, sea salt and black pepper). The original stoneware Belfast sink has also been retained and now complimented by a traditional wooden draining board together with cast brass tap fittings. In traditional cottage-style, the bathroom is also on the ground floor, and tucked into a cupboard in the bathroom is a family-sized washing machine. Clothes can be hung up to dry outside or on a traditional Victorian pulley-system ‘Kitchen Maid’ above the stairs! Fluffy bath sheets and hand towels are provided. The upstairs space The bedrooms are accessed via the original cottage-style steep stairway. There are two large double bedrooms upstairs, with comfortable pocket-sprung, king size beds and duck-down duvets – one bedroom with majestic views across the valley and the other to the peaceful terraced, rear garden. Bed linen is provided. CAR PARKING Street parking is available outside.
