Description

A charming, private, romantic, island cottage built in the 1920's that overlooks the ocean and is surrounded by lovely gardens. Bedrooms and decks look out to the sea. Three decks follow the sun from morning to glorious evening sunsets. Sleeps 5--a queen master bedroom, two twins in the other bedroom, and a daybed on the sunporch that sleeps one, with a single bathroom with fixed, wall shower inside the large porcelain bathtub. A fireplace in the living room with free firewood is the only source of heat. There is small, well-furnished and romantic kitchen and outdoor charcoal grill. Even a small vegetable garden of lettuce, basil, and tomatoes when in season. Monhegan, sitting 10 miles off the coast of mid-coast Maine, has a storied history of active lobstering and a varied landscape that has attracted many pleine air artists from the 19th C. onward including Jamie Wyeth and Rockwell Kent who both lived on the island. Two thirds of the island is preserved land with 17 miles of hiking trails (requiring good hiking shoes) out to the highest headlands on the eastern seaboard. There are only a few dirt roads on the village side and a few pickup trucks for establishments and lobstermen, so it's a "walking island". Spring and Fall bird migrations bring many serious birders. A fantastic historical and art museum in the lighthouse buildings along with several inns and restaurants, cafes, a brewery, and gift shops offer a local island charm. There are various musical and literary events during the summer, along with yoga and massage offerings. A great fish market offers everything from fresh lobsters to oysters, mussels, tuna, scallops, and other fish. Wifi connection offered. The cottage and island offers a wonderful retreat from this madding world--a place to refuel and relax and touch base with yourself and your family or friends. Renters must provide their own sheets and towels. One queen-size bed and up to three single beds. Also renters must clean the cottage before departure. Sometimes a cleaner can be arranged for $100, but difficult to find on Saturday morning.
