Description
Enjoy a peaceful retreat from the busy modern world in a 14th century farmhouse within Dartmoor National Park. Nattor Farm is perfect for children too and is located right out on the moors. Remote and secluded, it provides an ideal base for walking and wild swimming at Tavy Cleave. The traditional cobbled yard has parking for your car. No TV but complete with wifi, books, games, well equipped kitchen, study, bathroom, two bedrooms, central heating and cosy sitting room with woodburner. The space Number 2 Nattor Farm is one part of an historic Dartmoor frontier farm, being the final settlement on the moor in the Tavy Valley. No longer part of a working farm, the property is entered through a farm gate and parking is in the traditional cobbled yard which is shared with Number 1 Nattor Farm which is also available to book on Airbnb. Unfortunately, the uneven nature of the cobbles would make it unsuitable for wheelchair access or for people with limited mobility. There is storage for bikes in one of the granite outbuildings. Please note we do not allow dogs to visit to protect the wildlife in our gardens and ponds and livestock on the moor. The house has central heating and hot water for showers, baths and washing up on demand. The cosy sitting room has a wood burner set within a large inglenook fireplace with original clome oven and a brick and slate hearth. We will provide you with a basket of logs and kindling. More logs are available to purchase from us. There are two sofas and a south facing window seat with a lovely view. There is no TV, but as well as full fibre broad band (100Mb) to provide internet connection for your entertainment, you will find board and card games, jigsaws, books and musical instruments to while away the evenings in front of the fire. As you come in from the front porch you will find a small settle to take off your walking boots with storage space underneath. Next door, the study, with a desk, offers a peaceful separate workspace or retreat for quiet times. It is well stocked with local maps, Dartmoor walking guides, reference books and novels. You will also find a range of books, toys, games and art materials for children. Both these rooms have original slate floors. The spacious, well equipped kitchen, with induction hob, fan oven and microwave, has glorious views across the moors and down the Tavy Valley. A large oval table and dining chairs offer plenty of room for relaxed dining and the kitchen cupboards and drawers contain a good range of equipment for cooking and baking. We provide you with all the essentials such as an ironing board, iron, cleaning equipment and washing machine. As we have a septic tank we will also provide eco friendly washing and cleaning products. The bathroom is on the ground floor and has a shower over the bath, wash basin, lavatory and large heated towel rail. The two bedrooms are upstairs. The larger bedroom has a king sized double bed, chest of drawers and built in cupboard with a shelf and hangers. This room has a window seat with views over the traditional yard and the moors beyond. The second window faces south and provides good light and views. The smaller bedroom has two single beds, a chest of drawers, clothes hanging hooks and views to the north over the yard to the moors. One of the single beds is 3ft wide and the other one is 2ft 6 ins wide to fit in the available space. The kitchen door opens onto a south facing garden. Here you will find a large paved area with a picnic bench which is a perfect sun trap on a sunny day and is for your exclusive use. There is parking for 1 or 2 vehicles in the yard. Wifi is provided at 100Mb There are beautiful moorland walks from the farm gate and many paths to explore. The river Tavy, which flows close to Nattor Farm, provides many bathing and paddling pools as well as large flat rocks for picnicking and rock hopping. When the river is not too high it can be crossed, with care, on foot to explore the far banks towards Standon Hill. There is also a wooden footbridge at Standon Steps, a short way downstream giving access to central Dartmoor. For wild swimming enthusiasts Kings Pool in Tavy Cleave (a 20 minute walk from Nattor), is featured in the book "Wild Swimming Walks, Dartmoor and South Devon". This part of Dartmoor offers wonderful opportunities for stargazing. Please note that Nattor Farm is situated around a mile from Willsworthy Firing Range which is used by the MOD for firing practice on particular days. On these days access to parts of the moor, including Tavy Cleave, is closed. The closed areas are clearly marked with red and white posts and closure is signalled by a red flag which is raised in the car park at Lane End and on top of Ger Tor which is visible from just outside the gate. A six week firing timetable is available to view online if you Google Dartmoor firing times Although the firing can be heard, if it is a still day or the wind blows from Willsworthy, it is usually only intermittent. Please note that even on firing days there are many enjoyable routes available for walking and exploring locally. There is no firing during most school holidays and the whole month of August. Walking maps are provided for use during your stay. Guest access During your stay you will have exclusive use of the house and the patio area with flower beds at the back of the house. This is accessed through the kitchen. There is a large wooden gate on the far right as you face the back of the house and this marks the boundary with Number 1 Nattor Farm. The low wooden gate at the end of the paved area marks your other boundary. The cobbled yard is a shared space. Please park with care and consideration leaving as much room as possible for others to park and turn. Other things to note We can provide a high chair for a baby or toddler on request. Also a fireguard for the wood stove if required. There is a door at the bottom of the stairs so they can be closed off. Most door latches are fitted quite high up which would prevent a toddler reaching them. Please be aware that there are several small ponds in the other gardens at Nattor Farm and these are in gated areas for the safety of small children. Therefore it is important to keep all gates shut. There is no pond in the garden area of Number 2. The traditional cobbled yard in front of the house is a lovely original feature but it is quite uneven to walk on and therefore unsuitable for wheelchairs or people with restricted mobility. Care must be taken not to trip especially after dark. The track leading from Lane End to Nattor Farm is unmetalled so you will need to drive slowly and with care. The house is situated out on the moor and is over three miles from the nearest village, Mary Tavy, which has a small shop and pub therefore it is advisable to bring supplies of food and drink with you when you arrive. The nearest supermarkets are in Tavistock which is about six miles away.
