The Old Modern - Garden Suite

The Garden Suite at The Old Modern occupies the lower level of the rear building. Maximum capacity is four persons...two sharing the queen-sized bed in the tatami-matted main room, and two sharing the double sofabed. Due to the limited amount of space in the second bedroom, we recommend this unit for a couple or a family with children. This suite opens up to the expansive rear garden, whose centerpiece is a magnificent pine tree which towers high above. The space The Old Modern was built in 1929 by a prominent Kyoto architect as his residence. It was meticulously maintained throughout the years, and underwent a complete high-end restoration in 2018. It is an architectural treasure, and a rare example of an eclectic blend of traditional Japanese structure with some very "modern" Western details such as a fireplace, high beamed ceilings, and parquet flooring. The Old Modern consists of two two-storey buildings, separated by a traditional "nakaniwa" interior garden. There are four full-floor suites, each with en-suite bath/toilet. The location is in a quiet residential neighborhood in the traditional ceramics district in Southern Higashiyama. Gion is a 10 minute walk to the north, The Four Seasons is a 5 minute walk to the east, and the bustling downtown area is just 15 minutes' walk to the northwest. There are numerous public transportation options nearby. This suite retains a very subdued elegance which is typical of traditional Japanese architecture. All of our suites have these features: mini refrigerator, microwave oven, electric kettle, television, high-speed wifi internet, air-conditioning, washer/dryer, iphone, high-end pillows and goose-down comforters. Also provided in each suite is a Nespresso coffee/espresso maker with a selection of coffee capsules, as well as an assortment of teas. This suite has radiant (floor) heating, which keeps it warm and cozy in the winter. Guest access The Old Modern is divided into four completely private and fully equipped suites, each with en-suite bathroom and washer/dryer. Places where you may see other guests are in the shared entryway or in the lobby/library area. During your stay Our office is located nearby, and two full-time, English-speaking staff are available to offer assistance to guests before and during guest stays. Other things to note For large groups traveling together, you might consider renting one or more of the other suites as well... Please check out "Deco Suite" (up to 4 persons), "Star Suite" (up to 4 persons), and "Circle Suite" (1-2 persons). Or rent all four suites and have the place to yourselves!
