Description

The peaceful farmhouse is little changed since the 17th century, when it was built in a beautiful corner of Monmouthshire. Bedrooms have lovely views, ancient beams and comfortable beds; organic breakfast is in the big converted cider house kitchen. For evening meals there are plenty of pubs and excellent restaurants only a few miles away. The space This is my home where occasional B & B guests are welcome to use one or more of the four comfortable spare bedrooms. I don't rent out the whole house, but you are welcome to stay for bed and breakfast. I enjoy meeting people and - if they wish - showing them round the farm. Visitors always say how much they enjoy staying here. It's quite unlike anywhere else! Upper Red House is little changed since it was built around 1650. It stands in a quiet and beautiful corner of the Welsh countryside. A listed Historic building (Grade II*), it has original oak timbers and flagstone floors; and great views from all the rooms. It's an interesting house with a peaceful and friendly feel - some even say magical. The house was derelict for 30 years until 1995 when we came here (and won an award for its 'sensitive restoration'). Now it has some modern comforts, but still feels and looks like an old building. The farmhouse is surrounded by our organic farm. Wildlife flourishes in the ponds and flowery meadows, thanks to our conservation work and management without pesticides. We do all we can to preserve and encourage the biodiversity of birds, bees and bugs which we love - and need. There are a few pubs and restaurants nearby for evening meals. (Some are well-known so you might need to book.) Sometimes I can give walkers a lift to the pub, or they bring a picnic to eat here in the evening. Guests are given a generous vegetarian breakfast in the large kitchen, once the old cider house. Honey, fruit and jams come from the farm, and where possible everything is organic. There is free Wifi, no TV, no air fresheners (or other smelly potions), plenty of hot water, and a big log fire in the winter. Guest access Please book as far ahead as possible. Bookings at short notice are usually difficult. Children and pets are welcome but only by prior agreement and pets are not allowed in the bedrooms. Bedrooms (large and comfortable) are 2 double, 1 twin and 1 (small) single Bed and breakfast only. There's lots to do and explore in the area and we ask you to be away from the house in the daytime (10.00am to 4.30pm). You have use of your bedroom, bathroom, free wi-fi, breakfast in the big kitchen - and the grounds, surrounding farmland and woods. I don't share the living room with guests because I work there. During your stay I'm pleased to meet people, answer questions, give them lots of breakfast and help with local information, - but I'm busy all the time with a house, farm and much else to look after. I do part-time B&B, and you are very welcome to stay, but please understand it's still a private house. Some people expect a kind of hotel...which it isn't! You are offered the same as my friends and family and so far everyone seems to like it. Other things to note Upper Red House is at the end of a small road. Shops are 15 minutes drive away, so you may want to pick up anything you need before you arrive.
