Mkelekele Beach House

Mkelekele House is a private, beach-front family home in the middle of Tiwi Beach, a secluded stretch of unspoilt sandy shoreline to the south of Mombasa. Hidden amongst indigenous trees frequented by a myriad of birds and monkeys, the house is a tranquil space surrounded by nature. Enjoy dreamy ocean views from the upstairs balcony area and a feeling of being completely 'away from it all'. Guests stay on a self-catering basis, but with an excellent private chef for ultimate relaxation. The space Mkelekele House is a private family home located in the middle of an unspoiled, sandy white stretch of Kenya’s pristine coastline. It boasts a stunning beachfront location and uninterrupted views of the Indian Ocean. Situated on 6.5 acres of lush indigenous vegetation, the house feels extremely secluded and is the perfect escape from the outside world. Waves breaking on the beach, wind rustling in the leaves of the giant baobab tree and the cheerful melodies of the many bird species found in the garden are the only sounds you will hear. If calm tranquility is what you’re looking for then Mkelekele Beach House is the perfect place for you. The house sleeps eight people in four spacious, en-suite bedrooms and is available to rent on a self-catering basis. Beach access is a one-minute stroll down the garden path past a spectacular giant baobab tree. The sea is safe to swim in and best enjoyed first thing in the morning when it is cool, calm and flat. At low tide the reef is exposed and it is great fun to explore. Guest access Mkelekele Beach House is conveniently located about a twenty-five minute drive away from Ukunda Airport in Diani, making it extremely quick and easy to reach from Nairobi. Daily scheduled flights leave from Nairobi Wilson Airport or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to Ukunda Airstrip with the following airlines: Air Kenya, Safari Link and Jambo Jet. Alternatively, Mombasa is a forty-five minute drive away where there are numerous daily flight options into Moi International Airport. We are happy to arrange a taxi pick up from either airport, just let us know beforehand. The house has easy access to the shops and banks at Diani Beach (about a 15 minute drive away), as well as Kisite & Mpunguti Marine Park & Reserve, the Shimba Hills National Park and, slightly further away, Tsavo National Park. Other things to note FAQs IS THE HOUSE BEACH FRONT? Yes. The house is situated in the middle of a beach front plot and is the only house on the property. There is a private path from the house directly to the beach which is just 80 metres away / a couple of minutes walk through the palm trees. DOES MKELEKELE HOUSE HAVE A SWIMMING POOL? There is no swimming pool at present, but the ocean is right there and is delightful for swimming! DOES MKELEKELE HOUSE HAVE AC? No. There are ceiling fans in every bedroom and all rooms are ocean facing with expansive windows to let in the ocean breeze. It is generally a very pleasant temperature in all the rooms. IS THE HOUSE SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN? Yes, we welcome children of all ages. Mkelekele Beach House is split over two floors with a central staircase, wooden stairgates are available for both the top and bottom. The first floor of has a veranda with wooden banisters and two lines of cabling. Whilst it is safe for children, we recommend that small children be supervised at all times. Tiwi Beach is known for being a peaceful and secluded location, so if you’re looking for lively night-life nearby, then it might not be the place for you! Having said that, there are a couple of rustic beach bars and restaurants along the beach, including at Coconut Beach Lodge and Amani Tiwi Beach Resort. For a wider selection of bars and restaurants we recommend driving to Diani (20 minutes away) where there are lots of great options – many of these are detailed in our information booklet which you’ll find in the house. IS THERE A MALARIA RISK? The house is situated away from built up areas and instances of malaria in the area are rare. However, there is a risk of malaria. We recommend consulting with your doctor prior to travel for advice on anti-malarial medication. All beds have recently replaced mosquito nets and mosquito coils will be burnt around the house during the evening. It is highly advisable to wear mosquito spray at all times after dark. HOW MUCH DOES THE CHEF COST? Our lovely chef Zablon is included in the cost of your stay. WHAT SECURITY DOES THE HOUSE HAVE? We have a night-time security guard who patrols the house every night. All downstairs doors are locked at night. Bedrooms are lockable and the upstairs veranda had sliding doors which can be padlocked at night should you so wish. WHAT MEASURES HAVE YOU TAKEN IN RESPONSE TO THE CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK? All our team have been fully briefed on the recommended hygiene protocols to ensure the safety of our guests and staff. Masks will be worn by the chef and housekeeper at all times when interacting with guests and high-touch areas fully sanitised between groups. We have a mandatory 24hr period between bookings to ensure adequate time for cleaning and sanitising.
