Description

The welcoming fires and cosy snugness of Myall Cottage begins a journey into a rural past. This unique 3-bedroom cottage is surrounded by paddocks, red gums and a pastoral view from every window. The complete absence of TV and Internet is a true escape. Ideal for families and couples who enjoy open fires, starry nights, and a rural location in a peaceful setting near Casterton and the Glenelg River. The space Myall Cottage sits in the middle of a Western District property reached only by a farm track and is framed by wide views of paddocks with grazing cows. If you take the time to spend a few days, the Cottage will cast a spell as you live a slower pace of life in a different era. It certainly suits couples but is even more ideal for families. A rambling garden, paddocks to roam, games to play including musical instruments, paddock picnics to be had and if you wish to bring bikes, a well made 1 km track for safe riding all the way to the front gate and back. Aunt Daphne, born in 1909, was the last to live in the Cottage which saw it's heyday in the 1920's to 1930's. You will find that not much has changed since. This 100 year old cottage retains all its original furniture and historic fittings so expect some degree of quirkiness. The simple kitchen and bathroom are well equipped but there are fires to light, farm gates to open and shut and you will be awoken to the sound of chortling of magpies. The Cottage surrounds includes the Shearers Kitchen; the Old Orchard with fruiting trees; Shearers Huts; the Blacksmith Shop; the Gig Shed and the Woolshed, all dating from the 1900's. You are free to explore this space as there will be no-one there but yourselves and of course, the cows and calves looking on curiously. I do need to add that we feel the Cottage can only manage 4 guests at one time. We will always make an exception for families with a Grandparent so please ask! Guest access Check-in is easy. I will be waiting in my car on the Penola-Casterton Rd for your arrival. Together, we will travel on to the Cottage so you become familiar with the farm gates, the farm track and the cottage's location in the middle of the farm. For this reason, it is important that you arrive in daylight hours. I will be in touch, via email, the week of your arrival, to give you detailed directions as to where we will meet as there is no phone coverage once you leave the closest town. Myall is a working farm, however you will have access not only to the Cottage but you are free to ramble and explore the farm paddocks and the range of farm buildings that still remain from a bygone era. In winter months you may wish to find a spot under some red-gums, gather wood to light a fire and have a 'paddock picnic'. Other things to note In general, the Farming Season's dictates the progress of the farm year so Myall Cottage is closed during the Bush Fire Season in late December until mid March for our guests safety. However, with a mild summer we do give consideration to guests so please consider making an inquiry. June to August and sometimes into Spring are our most hectic cattle husbandry times. There will be the need to move livestock in around the paddocks as well as working with them in the cattle yards. For this reason, the Cottage Hosting Calendar will show the times the Cottage is unavailable. We certainly wish to make you feel most welcome, so please keep visiting this Listing to check the Cottage's availability. Generally there is friendly contact between the Host and Guests so it is requested that all visitors are fully vaccinated.
