Description
THIS COSY MOUNTAIN BOTHY (SLAP-UP BREAKFAST INCLUDED) IS IN ONE OF THE MOST AMAZING LOCATIONS IN THE UK. IT SITS 1,200 FEET UP ON OFFA'S DYKE PATH IN THE BRECON BEACONS NATIONAL PARK—YET IS JUST 45 MINS FROM THE PRINCE OF WALES (SEVERN) BRIDGE AND 10 MINS FROM A PUB. The space Staying in our bothy, you are not 'near' the mountains, or 'at the foot of' the mountains, or 'with easy access to the mountains'. You are IN the mountains, high up on the saddle of Hatterrall Ridge, a place others cannot drive to—in another world of heathery peaks and 70-mile views, of skylarks, merlins and wild ponies. After breakfast you can lace your boots and walk from the door. Yet you are still only a 10-minute drive from two pubs and a well-stocked village shop. The bothy is close enough to our house that we can bring you a home-cooked Full Welsh, vegetarian or vegan breakfast, while also being entirely separate—a private place in its own walled garden, facing south to Skirrid Fawr. The bothy itself is simple, but super-snug: centrally-heated, with hand-made mattress and ticking linen on the double bed, shower with proper water pressure, 'thunderbox' mahogany WC, and a fridge for drinks. It sits in the walled garden that was the subject of owner Antony Woodward's prize-winning memoir The Garden in the Clouds. Indeed, you may even wake up above the clouds: a wonderland shared only with a few sheep, ponies and the whaleback peaks of Sugar Loaf, Blorenge and Waun Fach poking through. We sit on the highest north-south ridge between here and the Urals in Russia, 2,400 miles away. In your room you'll find tips about, and menus from, all the best and most characterful local places to eat and drink—along with recommendations for walks, drives, road and mountain-biking (undercover storage available), plus other activities from paragliding to wild swimming. Most of all, though, this is a place for walkers. We sit on the most dramatic leg of Offa's Dyke Footpath: the 8-mile Hatterrall Ridge between Pandy and Hay-on-Wye. 'One of the most spectacular walks in Britain' said the Guardian—and there's no more magical starting point than our bothy in the clouds. WORD OF CAUTION: Living where we do, you may wake up in cloud, above the clouds - or with no clouds at all. Please understand that the weather can change rapidly in the hills and is not under our control! Also, please note there are stone steps, uneven ground, steep drops and open water so unfortunately the bothy isn't suitable for anyone with mobility issues or young children. Finally, you may encounter the odd spider or earwig - this is the country! Don't worry, we will happily move them if you don't want to. Other things to note Please be aware that the “bathroom” contains a SHOWER, not a bath - unfortunately Airbnb do not provide a way of making this clear. Also, the bothy is not set up for self-catering, but as a boutique B&B. We cook you a hearty breakfast (served in the bothy), and can provide simple pub-type evening meals such as lasagne or fish pie with a bit of notice. When you book, we send a list of our favourite local pubs and restaurants, which are also shown on a map in the bothy.
