Orléans is full of activities ranging from historical visits to more sporty activities such as canoeing and kayaking. It's up to you to choose what suits you best according to your tastes. Don't hesitate to make a little detour to the Orleans Tourist Office, which will give you more walks, hikes, visits or activities to do. Here is our selection of 5 original outings to discover Orléans from a new angle. 1- Visit the Olivet mills The 13 km long walk along the Loiret River will allow you to discover the mills of Olivet, the typical boat stations and the large properties. All this through three different trails (the Prés, Saint-Avit, and Fosse Marion). The walk allows you to discover the old mills that were formerly in economic activity. They are now converted into residential homes. The mills are fed by the waters of the Loire. This route will take you through four mills (Saint-Samson, Béchets, La Mothe, and Tacreniers) with old-fashioned architecture. The Moulin de la Mothe stopped grinding grain in 1914. The oak wheel, restored in 1999, is kept in the water to prevent deterioration of the wood. Very pleasant trails, which can be taken on weekends. You will enjoy the large children's play area and lawns for an outdoor picnic. You can access this walk for a fee of 7 euros per person, the start of the route will be at the Reine Blanche car park in Olivet. To visit these four mills, you will need 2 hours of your time. You will also need to book your place on the Tourisme Orléans website. 2- Visit to the catacombs If you want to discover the historical monuments of your city in more depth, we suggest a visit to the crypt of Saint-Aignan. This tour is accessible to children from 8 years old. For 8 euros per person you will have a guided tour by Brother Guillaume for 1 hour. To visit your cultural heritage, you must remember to book on the Orleans Tourist Office website. 3- Canoe/Kayak Ride on the Loire If you want to have fun with family or friends in Orleans, don't worry. In Orléans, you can take a ride on the Loire by canoe or paddleboard. Several routes are available to you, with departures in different places. Various distances are available with half-day or full-day rentals. This activity is accessible from the youngest to the oldest. 4- Visits to the heights of the Sainte-Croix Cathedral I hope for you that you don't have vertigo. Get a good view by climbing to the top of the Sainte-Croix d'Orléans Cathedral to see your city as a whole. You can be accompanied by a guide from the tourist office for a one-hour tour or you can do an individual tour. Visiting a historical monument is always impressive, but imagine yourself several meters above the ground. The Sainte-Croix d'Orléans Cathedral is no less than 114 meters high. In order to discover the city with a unique panorama, you will have to climb 252 steps, which will give you a breathtaking view. Book your visit at the Orleans Tourist Office for 7 euros per person. Access is forbidden for children under the age of 12 and pregnant women for safety reasons. Be careful not to bring a large backpack for climbing the steps. 5- Electric scooter ride on the banks of the Loire Urban Trotter's offers you a ride on the banks of the Loire in an electric scooter halfway between a scooter and a scooter. The Loire Valley, classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, discover the Loiret for a cultural stay including the Loire castles Architectural heritage The history of France and that of the Valley of the Kings have left their strong mark on the Loiret region. Let yourself be told the beautiful pages of history, immersing yourself in castle life: from the defensive fortresses of the Middle Ages of Sully-sur-Loire, classified as a Grand Site of the Loire Valley, Saint-Brisson-sur-Loire and Yèvre-le-Châtel, to the romantic residences of the 17th and 18th century constructions of the Châteaux de la Ferté-saint-Aubin and La Bussière, passing through the Renaissance Châteaux, with the Château de Chamerolles and its Perfume Museum, Meung-sur-Loire or Gien. Gardens of the Chateau de Sully-sur-Loire With a dense historical and cultural heritage, the Loiret remains a department of charm and character. The artistic and historical heritage of the Loiret can be read in the stones of the towns and villages. A stop is a must in Orléans la Royale, one of the oldest cities in France. The ancient Gallic city, which became the capital of Clovis and which Joan of Arc would make famous by delivering it from the English in 1429, offers its visitors its old center, now completely renovated. The city, classified as a "City of Art and History", displays all the assets of seduction with its large flowered parks, its private hotels, its museums, its redeveloped Loire quays... Discover the majesty and variety of the religious heritage in Loiret: the famous Sainte Croix d'Orléans Cathedral, the Basilica of Cléry-Saint-André linked to the memory of Louis XI, the Abbey of Saint Benoit-sur-Loire, a masterpiece of Romanesque art, or the Carolingian Oratory of Germigny-des-Prés, the Royal Abbey of Ferrière-en-Gâtinais... fascinating with their architectural prowess. Whether you're looking for sport or relaxation, with family or friends: golf, hiking and horseback riding, bike tours along the Loire, boat trips on the Briare and Loing canals, as well as the Loire. Parks, gardens and flowers With its three arboretums and eight gardens labeled "remarkable gardens", the Loiret offers you a glimpse of the quintessence of the "Garden of France". Botanical, landscaped, French or English... from small, unsuspected green spaces to the beautiful forest expanses of arboretums, lovers of parks and gardens will find here material to discover new species or to immerse themselves in refined atmospheres. Chamerolles Castle Park In Chamerolles, for example, admire the green setting that surrounds the castle; breathe in the heart of the city in the oasis that the 35-hectare Parc Floral draws around the source of the Loiret; enjoy the atmosphere and scents in the shade of a pergola in the intimate setting of the Jardins de Roquelin; browse the history of an 18th-century vegetable garden at the Château de La Bussière before contemplating sumptuous collections at the Conservatoire National de l'Ilex or the Arboretum des Grandes Bruyères. Or immerse yourself completely in the world of trees at the Arboretum National des Barres... Since 1997, the General Council has developed eight sensitive natural areas to make them "departmental parks" intended for walking, discovering and protecting nature: Meung-sur-Loire (Les Mauves), Châteauneuf-sur-Loire (which will be extended), Sully-sur-Loire, Cerdon (Etang du Puits), Briare (Trousse-Bois), Ardon (Les Dolines de Limère) and the Puiseaux and Vernisson meadow park, in the heart of the Montargois agglomeration, dedicated to wildlife observation. But the gardens are not the only ones to pay tribute to the long horticultural tradition of the Loiret: by embellishing their surroundings and their streets, towns and villages distinguished for their flowering will brighten your walks as you wander. Gateway to the UNESCO Loire Valley, the Loiret stretches its vast expanses of plains and forests along the last great wild river in Europe. A natural corridor, the Loire will guide you to discover one of the ends of the largest French site inscribed on the World Heritage list between Sully-sur-Loire in Loiret and Chalonnes-sur-Loire in Maine-et-Loire. From its meanders lined with alluvial forests to the golden sands of its bare banks, from its preserved islands to its historic quays, the Loire has shaped the landscape and the rhythm of the life of the cities and villages it crosses for centuries. Sometimes peaceful and indolent, fiery and tumultuous, its shimmering waters reflect the fiery skies of the setting suns, just like the ponds of Sologne and the great state forest of Orléans. A truly endearing aquatic dimension with its fauna, flora and country atmosphere that you discover while strolling along the canals of Orléans, Loing, Briare and Latéral to the Loire... So many natural scenes that come to life on sunny days with festive events such as the Loire Festival that revives the traditional Loire flotillas (barges, toues, futreaux, plates...). During your stay you can enjoy a great historical event that takes place in May "THE FESTIVAL OF JEANNE D'ARC" Food and wine At the turn of a country market, authentic local specialties await you: andouille de Jargeau, game (hare, pheasant, deer, wild boar...), Loire fish (pike-perch, pike, frying...), goat and cow cheeses (cendré d'Olivet), Gâtinais saffron, Orleans vinegar, not to mention local sweets... THE WINES OF LOIRET A tradition that draws simple and natural recipes from the soil with an authentic taste. Andouille de Jargeau, sheep's milk cheeses, exceptional game... make up a palette to be tasted with a glass of velvety wines from Giennois and Orléanais. ORLÉANS VINEGARS AND MUSTARDS Never the capital of France (although several kings resided there), Orleans was the undisputed capital of vinegar! THE OLIVET PEAR This is where the famous eau-de-vie is produced from Olivet pears, a delicious nectar with a subtle aroma that warms both the throat and the ears! FRUITS AND VEGETABLES Take advantage of your visit to Loiret to shop for fresh products with incomparable flavors. HONEY Who hasn't enjoyed a spoonful of honey? Simple and universal pleasure that takes on a very special flavor in Gâtinais and Sologne, famous producing regions. PITHIVIERS Whether you're an amateur cook or a seasoned pastry chef, the pithiviers will be born in your oven, and we'll reveal the secrets of an authentic recipe. GÂTINAIS SAFFRON A noble spice with a carmine color that so delicately enhances the flavor of dishes, the history of saffron has long been linked to that of the Loiret. It is more particularly in Gâtinais that its cultivation has prospered, creating a fruitful local trade. THE PRASLINES OF MONTARGIS By tasting this famous Montargis specialty based on roasted almonds coated with caramel, we can only venerate its brilliant inventor.
