Wildlife and Walking in the Blackdown Hills

The Old Milking Parlour is nestled at the bottom of a private drive in the Blackdown Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This peaceful area has barely changed for centuries, and is perfect for getting away from it all. With rare breed sheep, pigs and chickens, we are slowly beginning to restore this old farm with environmental and regenerative agriculture practices. The space We hope you will find the Old Milking Parlour cheerful and cosy, with everything you need to relax after a day out in this lovely area. We are slowly beginning to restore the farm in as environmentally friendly a way possible. We have a small amount of livestock - including free range chickens, so don't be surprised if you are greeted by one outside the front door! We think the Parlour is the perfect get-away, but it may not be ideal for those looking for a luxury holiday with all the mod cons. If you love the countryside and being outdoors, or you need to escape the chaos of everyday life, then look no further! There is a private outside space to sit and enjoy the fresh air BUT it is not properly child- or dog-proofed yet - we are hoping it will be soon - perhaps you can help us decide how and where! But this means we can't allow dogs for now - and also families with younger children must be aware that it is easy for intrepid adventurers to escape. The outdoor seating area is by the kitchen, and you are very welcome to walk in our fields, and down to the magical River Culm - if you're lucky you may spot an otter or a kingfisher! Although our valley is hidden away, it is also only a short drive from Taunton, and about 45 minutes from either Exeter or the Jurassic coast. Exmoor is also nearby, but once you're in the Blackdowns you may not want to leave. There is masses to do on the doorstep, especially for those who are into nature, walking, cycling, stargazing, wild swimming, or just wanting to get away from things for a while. Our (fibre!) wifi is now up and running, and we have plenty of DVDs, so if you want to put your feet up in the evening, you can! Guest access There is a long field behind the Parlour that takes you down to the river (beware with little ones!), and you can follow the river as it meanders down to the local ford. We have a small section we have allocated as a mini nature reserve, where roe deer and herons like to hide. The river isn't very deep, but it is magical, and there are islands to explore. If you're lucky you might see a kingfisher or a dipper - or even an otter. Wherever you go, please remember that children must be supervised at all times - and please remember to shut the gates! There are some fields that we ask guests kindly not to enter, but you will always be able to get down to the river and our mini nature reserve!
