It served the villagers for over 200 years, and has now been professionally renovated to a very high standard creating a luxurious holiday cottage. From early in the 19th century until the turn of the 20th century, it was Holloway’s Printers, locally known as the Bampton Stamp Office. In the 20th century, it became a village shop selling groceries, sweets and tobacco, and in later years, pet supplies. It was looked after by a succession of shopkeepers until its closure in 2010. Located on the edge of the market square, you are a stone’s throw from the village amenities including four pubs, cafe´, restaurant, convenience store, art gallery, library, post office, butchers and pharmacy. Bampton is in the west Oxfordshire area of the Thames Valley, and was the filming location for the village scenes in the popular television series ‘Downton Abbey’. This is a perfect cottage for families and groups to get together, enjoy the property and explore the surrounding area which includes beautiful open countryside, quintessential English villages and a host of award-winning restaurants. You can still see many traditions in the village including morris dancing (it boasts three teams), The Great Original Shirt Race, May garland making and a flower festival, all of which take place on the Spring Bank Holiday weekend. The towns and villages of the Cotswolds including Bourton-on-the-Water, Stow-on-the-Wold, Burford and Chipping Norton, are within easy reach from Bampton. You can indulge yourself in a traditional afternoon tea in one of many tea rooms within half an hour’s drive or enjoy hiking for hours in unspoilt countryside. If you would like a larger range of shops, take a 5-mile trip to nearby Witney, or travel further afield to either Bicester village with its 130 designer shops, or the shopping outlet centre in Swindon.
