Khan Cottage: views and birdsong
Description
A stilt house which elevates you to the tree tops, Khan Cottage enjoys a spectacular outlook. Despite our faraway feel, the vibrant town of Berry is only a five-minute drive away and we are close to beautiful South Coast beaches. The space Khan Cottage is fully self-contained and the property has Biodiversity Conservation status (see below). We have 135 acres of rolling rainforest, pasture and creeks, plus a wrap-around deck with views which go on forever. Swing in the hammock and you have only the call of the Whip Birds to disturb you. The accommodation includes two bedrooms: one queen-size room with its own deck and one double bedroom, both supplied with quality linen and towels. The house is lovingly furnished and equipped with a kitchen, bathroom, wood-burning heater, gas heater and Bluetooth speaker with an aux cable for connection to your phone. There is a small library of DVDs at the house. Guest access Whether you book one bedroom or two, the house is yours for the duration of your stay. Please note that the base-rate tariff (prior to Airbnb charges) is $700 for the weekend for one couple and $900 a weekend for four adults. A weekend is a Friday and Saturday night OR a Saturday and Sunday night. Two nights midweek cost $650 for one couple - rates then reduce after the two-night minimum stay . Two person rates are for one-bedroom use. It is not possible to breakdown pricing to this degree on the Airbnb website. There is no wi fi at the house. Khan Cottage is a place to enjoy its absence. Should you need access to the internet this is available at cafes in Berry where there is also 'in-town free wi fi' available 24 hours a day. Other things to note You will be staying in a Biodiversity Conservation Area. Twenty five years ago when we bought the land, our creeks - like most in the Illawarra - were dense privet, lantana and other weeds. Today they are regenerating Illawarra Subtropical Rainforest, a Critically Endangered Vegetation Community, and uniquely so among neighbouring properties. It is a life-long endeavour to return as much of our property to this endangered rainforest as we can. To do so requires hard work in often unpleasant conditions and we have dedicated countless thousands of hours of labour and many tens of thousands of dollars to ensuring its success. We have been awarded Federal, State and local government grants to assist us in primary weeding but nearly all secondary and maintenance weeding we carry out ourselves - hand weeding an ever increasing expanse of rainforest to prevent inevitable weed reinvasion from surrounding sites. In March 2020, the property was granted Biodiversity Conservation status by the NSW government because of the rare young rainforest that now stands where at the start of our tenure there grew only privet and for the endangered species it is able to support. Your stay at Khan Cottage enables us to continue financing this project. You can walk the mown path to the closest creek, two-minutes from the house, see young Cabbage palms and Red Cedars growing among a diverse canopy, understorey and ground cover; wake to the birds who so enjoy their restored habitat and watch from the verandah as the mists rise, dissipate then settle again over the escarpment.
