Description
Originally built in 1880 and later expanded to its present four bedrooms, living room, and dining room, this house retains its historic dignity, but has been embellished over the years with certain structural eccentricities that give it antique charm. Only a few blocks from the historic district, Dr. Seuss is steps fropm a variety of retail shops and restaurants. The campuses of Washington & Lee University and the Virginia Military Institute are nearby, the Va. Horse Center a short drive. The space After its construction in 1880, the house consisted of two rooms on the lower level, one of them the kitchen and dining area, and two rooms on the second floor. As was the case in its day, some of the house rested on a rubble foundation that would eventually contribute to the character of the house as seen today. Sometime in the 1930s, it is believed, the house was expanded to its current size, a substantial increase in living area. But as time passed, so did the rubble foundation crumble, eventually to a point where it allowed the house to tilt to the right and causing the tiny kitchen door to assume a new slant, as well as virtually every window and wall, with plaster walls developing cracks that still occur today. The house lay dormant for a number of years until the current owners purchased the property and began a restrained restoration, including stabilizing the foundation. The owners' daughter, who was to spend her senior year at Washington & Lee in the house, remarked on seeing it, still in its crooked and rather dingy glory, "This looks like a house Dr. Seuss would live in." And so it became and so it remains today, to the pleasure of many who have spent time here - one group even serving up breakfast of green ham and eggs. In its current guise, it's perfect for families attending events at the universities or weddings or visiting relatives. Situated in front of the Lexington police station and next to city hall, It is NOT suited for large parties (nor are they allowed), but it is in a reassuringly safe neighborhood. Dr. Seuss doesn't have granite counter tops or embroidered robes, a spa or a wine cellar. But it does have an endearingly quirky nature, a relaxing ambience, and a great location from which its guests can visit this most beautiful Virginia town.
