Today, it welcomes many visitors and tourists. The Port of Sant Elm (or Sa Palomera) was one of the most important ones on Majorca due to its strategic location. It gave shelter to the ships that covered the route between Algiers, Palma and Barcelona via the straits of Sa Dragonera. That is the reason why James II King of Majorca ordered to build there the hospital of Sant Elm, perhaps the first one in the region around Palma. It was used for the quarantine (40 days of preventive isolation) imposed on sick sailors before they could travel around the island. A tower was erected there to watch pirate ships and to stop suspect vessels from bringing in infected people. The building work was completed in 1342 during the reign of James III. In 1597 the hospital was shut down due to the frequent attacks. In 1868 the estate was purchased by Archduke Ludwig Salvator of Austria, who had fallen in love with the beauty of this place. In 1922, the property passed to his heirs. Sant Elm Castle was purchased in 1995 by Fundació Illes Balears, which renovated the building respecting the heritage elements and putting an end to decades of neglect. The building has been classified as a BIC (“Bé d’Interès Cultural”, meaning “Site of Cultural Interest”) by the Consell de Mallorca and has also been registered as a fortified building in the Inventory of the European Cultural Heritage.
