Walk up to Castell Dinas Brân History of the House and the Yale Connection Plas yn Yale is the ancestral home of the Yale family. One notable descendant, Linus Yale, began designing and manufacturing bank locks in America in the 1840s, leading to the creation of the world‑famous Yale Lock Company. The house is also known by its Welsh name Plas yn Iâl, meaning Hall in Iâl. It sits in the Iâl Valley – iâl meaning “fertile” in Welsh and pronounced yal. During Edward I’s conquest of Wales, Iâl was annexed early on and attached to Shropshire, becoming anglicised as Yale. Despite this, the area remained culturally Welsh and continued to follow Welsh laws and customs until the Statute of Rhuddlan reinstated Yale within Wales.
