A notable members of the family include Linus Yale who in 1840 began designing and manufacturing a series of bank locks in America, which developed into the world-renowned 'Yale Lock' company manufacturing locks and security systems. The house is also known by its Welsh name Plas yn iâl: translated as ‘Hall in iâl’ The house is situated in the iâl valley; iâl means fertile in Welsh and is pronounced ‘yal’. During the Conquest of Wales by Edward I, Iâl was taken very early on and added to the county of Shropshire, anglicised as Yale. However, it remained Welsh in culture and retained Welsh laws and customs until the reinstatement of Yale in Wales by decree of the Statute of Rhuddlan.
