The space The Fort (Fortino) " from which the city got its name "Forte dei Marmi" - "Fort of the marbles" The fortress was built to defend the coast from outer attacks. Later it became the place where the marble was stored before being sent to the pier for shipping. Now it symbolizes the heart of the city on the wonderful promenade towards the Pier sorrounded by the best Shops, Cafès, Bars and Restaurants. Everything is just outside the door.
