The Rennsteig, the most famous hiking trail in Germany, is in the immediate vicinity. From Ludwigsstadt you can explore a lot. Ask us, Martin or me. We can tell you a lot about this region, about the country and people, about the former border, crafts and culture! First of all, the small town itself. It is located exactly in the middle between Munich and Berlin with a railway connection. 330 km in each direction. Also in the middle between the neighboring district towns of Kronach and Saalfeld, each 35 km. The big railway bridge has an interesting history. It was built in 1885 and bridges the Trogenbach valley. If you're lucky, you'll see a steam locomotive on it every now and then. In winter, there is a very nice play of colors when a red train stands out from the white snow. Many photos for magazines were taken from our house with the best view of the striking bridge. Television teams also use the location of our house for filming. The Sommerbergweg is ideal for your morning jog or for a small evening walk. From our house a little uphill and then on a level stretch over to the district of Thünahof. From here you have a completely different view of our small town. This circular route is well suited to get a first impression of the location of Ludwigstadt. By the way, this is also a tip for a cozy evening walk, where it is easy to encounter a deer or hare and other wild animals. Another recommendation, for the first few days, is hiking trail no. 7, which passes by the house, about 4 km into the "gold village" Steinbach an der Haide. This is an absolute "MUST"! There is a lot to do here. In summer, a visit to the outdoor pool is inviting, in winter to the indoor pool. Ski lifts for beginners and advanced skiers, or for example a visit to the Royal Privileged Shooting Society, or on the tennis court. Many well-marked hiking trails characterize our hiking region: Whether in one of the "most beautiful geotopes in Bavaria", to the Schönwappenweg on the Rennsteig, along the "Green Belt", the former inner-German border, or along small streams, up to the heights with panoramic views... For hikers, an Eldorado! In Ludwigsstadt is the German Slate Museum, which allows a very rewarding insight into the history of slate processing. From Ludwigsstadt, the slate panels once went all over the world. The museum also has tourist information as a contact for information on questions of all kinds and of course you will also receive brochures here! The "golden village", a district of Ludwigstadt "Steinbach an der Haide", can be hiked directly from our front door over the mountain. The district of Ebersdorf is known for its dance area and the history of the special costume fair. A hike or drive to Lauenstein is particularly beautiful. Special pleasures for body and soul await you here. A castle that stands on top of a mountain, but which you can then look down on - that is Lauenstein Castle, in a dreamlike environment. For the bodily pleasures there are, among other things, two chocolate factories...! Get to know the neighboring towns and be amazed at what's on offer here... The largest slate quarries on the continent were once located in neighboring Lehesten. Even today there is an opportunity to visit relics from the past in the local slate park. A special feature can be admired in Kleintettau. One of three tropical houses in Europe is located in Kleintettau. Here, exotic fruits and plants ripen at an altitude of 650 m. This is thanks to the waste heat of a company that produces perfume bottles for the high-end! Everything from liquid glass to the finished bottle, or the European Bottle Museum can be visited in this company. Particularly beautiful destinations in summer are the reservoirs: the Ködeltalsperre near Nordhalben, the Hohenwartestausee, or Germany's largest dam, the Bleilochtalsperre near Saalburg/Bad Lobenstein. On the latter two you can take a boat trip. Or would you rather swim? Ludwigstadt's outdoor pool invites you to visit the small Windheim bathing lake, charmingly in the middle of the forest - and coffee and cake are also available there…! From above, the landscape can best be admired from the observation towers Thüringer Warte on the Ratzenberg, or from the Altvaterturm on the Wetzstein. The neighboring town of Probstzella is also worth a visit. The HDV "Haus des Volkes", a hotel built in the 1920s in the Bauhaus style of the last century, or a look back at the history of the GDR: The Border Railway Museum in Probstzella. The former alum mines with their colored stalactites, the Saalfeld fairy grottoes and the Morassina near Schmiedefeld are charming not only for the eyes. Both are also used as healing tunnels! A visit is always worthwhile! A number of cities worth seeing are on our doorstep, which you can easily explore from here, such as the world cultural city of Bamberg, Weimar, Bayreuth, Erfurt, Gotha, Coburg, Jena, Kulmbach, Kronach...
