Description

Off grid paradise just off the continental divide trail in the chain of craters wilderness study area with el malpais national monument lava tubes and flow walking distance to the east and el morro towering into the sky not far to the west. On the acoma-zuni historic trail so acoma sky city and zuni ruins close by. At dusk you can see the bats exit the caves of el malpais and explore lava tubes and lava frozen waterfalls and see the ventura natural arch. Come visit this place and escape society! The space Off grid camping and shelter available for continental divide trail and zuni acoma trail backpackers, rv, van and truck campers too are welcome. Primitive off grid location in the chain of craters wilderness study area, so you must bring all your own supplies and enough water for your stay. There are no neighbors or visual pollution to this pristine spot so please plan to pack out whatever you pack in. Any trash left behind will destroy it for the next guests so leave it as you found it. Enjoy the Shelter out of place! Guest access All of the el malpais national monument park and chain of craters wilderness study area is yours to explore on foot from the campsite please respect navajo lands several miles to the west and avoid disturbing residents as there is plenty to explore to the north south and east of the site. Detailed maps on continental divide trail and chain of craters wilderness and el malpais road, trail and topo maps all are available online so download to your device before heading out. Other things to note Possible spotty cell service but traditional gps works fine, the craters themselves are a point of reference as well as the edge of the lava flow with backcountry hwy 42 following it. Big tubes area is close by and lava falls as well are sights not to be missed. Bring sturdy hiking shoes with ankle support as its very rocky with lava stones in the malpais(badlands in english). This is an incredible geological area for photography, and study as well as isolation and reflection during this crisis a perfect escape and retreat!
